Got a day off work so delved into my chest full of old mags,programmes,photos etc.
Found these at the bottom,haven't seen them for years,brings back good memories of spending time with dad who passed away in 2009.
Bought mc16 brand new and then had a mate of a mate make a fibre glass fairing.
First photos show pre season testing at Mallory Park, body warmer over leathers show it must have been cold and probably very early march.
Other photos show out front at Cadwell Park and first trophy on mc16.
Other photos are from Carnaby raceway near Bridlington.
A long time ago and some great memories.
I could run with most TZR except the tuned ones, I ended up with a KR1s in 1990 which was obviously a much faster bike.
But the mc16 holds a special place in my memory bank.

I always wanted a KR1S when they came out, i seem to recall they held the top speed crown for the 250cc two stroke bikes. Just doubt if the build quality is up there with Honda, and the parallel twin layout was starting to look a bit dated compared with some of the other 250s. Got a soft spot for all the strokers though really.

What sort of power where you getting from the MC16 in race trim? I'm toying with the idea of racing mine, some of the TZR's are bloody quick though, I've got a set of JHA pipes, MC18 carbs, MC21 sp cylinders, and going to run RM125 single ring pistons, so hopefully enough to keep up with the yam's and aprilia 250's that go well too.
How did the handling and brakes compare too? I know it's 20 odd years ago so probably hard to say for sure :p

I bought the bike very early in the year and the only things we did was fit a catch tank, fit fibreglass fairing, and lock wire bolts etc.
We took the drive out of the oil pump and ran Castrol A747 premix.
We didn't have much money and certainly couldn't afford any engine failures due to tuning.
We knew from Colin Appleyard motorcycles about the F3 kit in Japan which would have been awesome.
We went to Three Sisters circuit to get another signature on my licence but all we got was grief and complaints from fellow racers.
We agreed no points in championship, no trophy for a top 3 finish. We rode sensibly and took the signature but in principal I never rode another meeting organised by the club.
Performance wise, it was quicker than the top LC250's, and Gammas, was equal to the standard TZR's but lost out to tuned ones by approx 13bhp.
The brakes were superb and this was my strong point. I think we ran Metzeller ME1 rear and ME33 fronts, good enough to drag the belly pan and wear away the sponsors graphics.
We went to Mallory Park, Elvington, Carnaby, Cadwell Park on regular basis and more often than not finished top 4 or 5 against riders from different clubs.
The bike ran for 2 seasons with no problems and total reliability.
People used to come across the paddock and have a good look, it looked a fantastic piece of kit and I loved it.

Sounds like you had some really good results on a limited budget, I haven't got 2 pence to rub together but trying to put an NSR back on the grid and do it justice, I've searched the forum loads to find people still racing them but it seems to dry up after 08 or so in the uk at least.
I'm hoping mine can stay reliable but I'm the same can't really afford blowing the bike up every other weekend. I bet buying the F-3 kit back in 87 would have cost as much as another bike! Same today I suppose except you can't find the parts :p doubt even the most highly strung TZR could cope with 68ps.
Why did the other riders kick up a fuss at 3 sisters? Really glad to hear the chassis and breaks where/are so good, if I can get mine handling anywhere near as good as my NC30 I think the bike will be good enough for podiums in the sub64 hp class I currently race in only problem is the rider! :p only trouble at the moment is tyres, looking likely that I'll have to source a couple of 17' rears and at least 2 3.0/17 fronts, going to bump the weight up which is a shame, and I quite like the 3 spoke wheels.
I will post up plenty of photos and info on how I get on, unsure if it will be 2016 or 2017 that I do have it ready, hopefully sooner rather than later!
The NSR top-end is good for thousands of kms in standard form, and the crankshaft good for in excess of 70hp. As long as the motor is assembled well and no corners are cut, and top line lubricants used, then there should be no reliability issues to worry about.
While it's relatively easy to get an MC16 over 50hp, it's not simply a case of bolting parts of later models on, so my advice would be to concentrate more on the chassis if you're budget for tuning is limited. I would do as much possible with the standard setup, to retain its weight advantage. _________________ Andy.

Back in 1987 to enter the production 250 class in England, the bike was supposed to be an official import. When we took it out of the van we were surrounded by what seemed like half the paddock. Most were curious but some said we were cheating.
Believe me, cheating was prevalent among most production racers and later with the KR1s, if you didn't cheat with the top lads you wouldn't get into the top 10.
With my bike we had the engine sorted by Terry Shepherd which included having to run Yamaha TZ pistons, bronze inserts in heads to deter detonation. We ran 50% 4 star/ 50% avgas to maintain cooler running along with different 5th and 6th gears in the box.
Ex tt winner Mick Lofthouse told me that one and I went a second a lap quicker at Mallory Park next time out.
With the MC16 I would have been a guinee pig regards development. I was going to buy the TZR but when I saw the Honda going round on the turntable in the window of Colin Appleyard's I fell in love with its looks.
Tyre size didn't seem a problem all those years ago but I guesse as bikes got quicker then stickier rubber was required.
If I were you I would stick with standard wheels and run Bridgestone BT9's, I'm sure they would out perform the Metzellers, and to me they were great.
I was probably not quick enough to out ride the tyres, I had a good time though and have some great memories.
Oh I didn't realise it had to be an official model would be a bit crap if it was like that nowerdays haha. That's what I love about the 2 strokes so many different bits to have a mess around with to try and get the best out of them, half the fun of racing IMO is messing about with the bike to try and get a bit of an advantage. Shame about the cheating though, I'd like to think there isn't any nowerdays but I'd bet there still is even at club level.
Trouble with tyres is I'm used to racing on supercorsa's which are unbelievably good, I'd i can find a good dry tyre and some wets in MC16 fitment then I'll stick with 16 wheels, I'm running Pirelli dragon something or other on there now which feel good but it's hard to tell the difference between any tyre till your on track I think.
Oh, your probably right about the cheating nowadays Kieran, probably more in the nationals than clubbie stuff,back in 02 my son was riding the Triumph tt600 for Jack Lilley in the junior s/stock at bsb meetings, and cheating was rife, any non mechanical fool could hear from pitwall that many of the front running bikes weren't stock. cheating was all the rage in the 400 class back when i raced,bored out fzr and zxr 400's were the main culprits _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
