Crankshaft Installation Question

Fri Apr 15, 2011 7:49 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

When installing a new crankshaft into an engine case do the seals get bedded in silicone sealant to the engine case? During disassembly I noticed that the crank seals had been previously set in silicone. Does this include the center seal with the o-ring? Or just the two outer seals? Or none?

And while we're on this topic, the cylinder head gasket was also gooped up with the same red silicone. So much so that some of the coolant holes were restricted if not outright blocked. I thought the head gasket was to be installed "dry"?

When I did mine I installed the seals without silicone and the headgaskets should also go on dry. Apart from the crankcase faces, there should be no need for silicone.

Ive never used sealer on crank seals or head gaskets. For the base gaskets I use a very fine layer of assembly grease to help the material from sticking as well as it does help create a nice seal. For the NSR metal head gasket, I guess you could do the same (I also apply assembly grease to my o-rings on my RS heads).

For the crank case matting surfaces, you really dont need a lot of sealer (I actually like yamabond), just enough to ocver the faces of the matting surfaces, taking care not to get any in the dowel pin holes, bolt holes, etc..

IMHO;

Definately not on the head gasket or the crank seals.
I understand why people use it with the base gasket (though I've never seen one leak), I just use a smear of grease which means the gasket doesn't stick when you take it apart again.
A light smear with a good sealant between any bottom end faces that are metal to metal without a gasket is OK.

Yeap,

The guys are correct... Many people tend to do that because they think that they will seal the engine better... But all they do is making it worse... another thing that I have seen many times is applying to many sealant to the surface that needs to be sealed and blocking the oil routes/grooves... As Gallant say you need a small amount of sealant... Don't over do it...

Regards
Michael
