I have a MC28 and have just blown my second rectifier. Does anyone know what causes these things to blow? I am running a full Tyga RSW body kit so not sure if it is the increased power of the front lights or maybe it was getting too hot when where it was bolted under the seat.
If anyone in NZ has a spare or knows where I can get one please let me know. My local Honda shop wanted NZ$206 for a generic one which seems a little steep and would hate to price a genuine one. _________________ 94 mc28 SE
Get one for a late 90's CBR900rr Fireblade (something like this), mount it to a decent bar of aluminium bolted across the subframe and put this piece of corrugated plastic that keeps the heat in and the cool air out where it belongs (in the bin).
And think yourself lucky you didn't melt your PGM at the same time. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread

Im a little confused. You say have a big bit of aluminum, I guess as a heat sink, but then you say have the corrugated cover so as to keep the cool out.
What is causing these things to blow. _________________ 94 mc28 SE
Hey bro, John is saying that the black plastic 'undertray' that comes with the Tyga kit is serving only to keep heat inside the fairing which is adding to your problem. If you chuck it in the bin then air will flow through the tail fairing better and help to cool your reg/rec.
So he's recommending that you make up a more effective heat sink to mount your reg/rec to AND get rid of the undertray to improve cooling airflow.
Never buy parts from inside NZ mate. Not unless you enjoy a good raping anyway. Unless they're from econhonda in Te Aroha:
I think i got my spare reg/rec from Tyga as part of a larger shipment of bits and pieces - as John says: the part is common to many Hondas and the one i have now has cooling fins cast into its body as an added bonus. Even if you buy just the reg/rec from over seas then add shipping and gst you'll still save yourself a fortune on what the NZ wholesaler will charge you. Because they are dirty, get rich quick c**ts.
As for what's causing the blow outs i can't help there mate, sorry. _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...

Cheers Hermit. I dont know how I miss read the post so bad. Yes have a piece of heat sink I can use to cool it down and will get rid of the plastic cover.
The Part number for the mc 28 reg/rec is 31600-MV4-000 but Eco doesnt have any exact part in stock. Does anyone have any other Honda reg/rect part numbers with work? _________________ 94 mc28 SE
Tyga have them in stock for $38.29 USD in their MC21 'new Honda parts' stock list. _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...
No problem cuz, btw i use the floppy undertray thing with my Tyga tail to keep the rain (and other things that get flicked off the rear wheel) away from the electrics in there and have never had trouble with the reg/rec but then i only tend to run mine for like, 20 minutes at a time seeing as its a track only bike. I have no additional heat sinkage going on either - the reg/rec is just bolted straight onto the Tyga subframe.
Just so you got some grounds for comparison.
Mine is a 300 though and besides many other advantages the bigger engine is known to be easier on regulator/rectifiers. _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...
hondas make shite regulaters, fact
everything else they make usually last for ages but every honda ive ever owned(never ridden my nsr) or every honda ive known people to own they have had to replace there regulater at some point
suzukis have weak gearboxes
kawasakis suspension go hard
yamaha um not sure
italian bikes u can garentee the electrics go wrong
honda need regulaters replacing
A couple of things caused the 90's 250/400 greybike Honda's to blow reg/rec's
the o.e. part isn't very good.
lots of UK bikes tend to run H4 bulbs with 55w headlights instead of the 35w Jap o.e. bulbs and run the headlights all the time.
the Tyga tail just exasperates the problem by mounting the reg/rec badly and stopping cool air getting to it.. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
