NGK BR9ES or BR9ECM

Wed May 11, 2005 3:50 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

just in case you all fell asleep reading my lengthy post about getting my bike up and running
B4 you got to the part about my bikes spark plugs
ill ask it as a stand alone question

How much difference is there in running BR9ES plugs to the reccomended BR9ECM plugs...

$2 each VS $15 each is pretty significant to tunning costs!

Anybody ever use the ES ?

Thanks

Nope!

BR9ECM stands for:
    B - 14mm thread
    R - resistor type
    9 - heat range
    E - 19mm (thread) reach
CM - COMPACT TYPE, LOW ANGLE ground electrode - and there's your clue...

BR9ES stands for:
    B - 14mm thread
    R - resistor type
    9 - heat range
    E - 19mm (thread) reach
    S - standard 2.5mm centre electrode

For the sake of a $30 set of plugs, I personally wouldn't risk my $1000 top-end by fitting something Honda hasn't recommended! That's a real false economy!!

If you really want to use cheap plugs, the first thing you should do however is measure the "sticky-down" bit to make sure it's not going to either touch the piston or be too close to the piston. Either situation is just as bad as the other.

thanks for the Reply
have no idea how long the bike has been run using those plugs
so i know they are at least not hitting, but as far as too close.
who knows.....

i did some research / comparison of plugs
and some "Eqivalents" to the BR9ECM are

Splitfire platinum TP406B $5.99
Denso W27EMRC $2.24
Autolite SF406B $ 2.09

who knows what the rating of "Equivalent" means though

The break down for NGK that you just did was great Andy
no idea what the break down on those other "Equivalent" plugs are

Wish i had a set of all of Them right now so i could measure the height of the tab above the electrode, as this seems to be the concern in the equation.

The Denso W27EMRC is a Honda recommended alternative.

I'd personally still use the NGK as I have always used them, but Honda wouldn't recommend them if they were crap! (Well, I doubt they would unless there was a lot of money in it!! Smile)

Mind you, I think the NSR charging system is Nippon Denso... so I'll leave you to make your own mind up on that one!!

I had BR9ES in my MC-18 for years and never had a problem. I raced my bike on those plugs. The reason I ran them was I didn't know any better.
The bike had them in it when I got it. I still have the same top end on the mc-18. I have switched to the BR9ECM because they clear the bodywork better.

I think the "compact" part refers to the "outside" part of the plug, but the "low angle ground electrode" part is the bit that probably makes a difference.

The MC16 uses the ES (or ECS) plug; from MC18 onwards, Honda specifies BR9ECM.

If the ES or ECS works then it works, but I'd say stick with the specified plug as the more you change the spec' the more likely you are to encounter problems.

Gordon Jennings knows about spark plugs, and other stuff too. Here is a link to the definitive article on spark plugs. http://www.strappe.com , click on "Tech Topics", and choose "Spark Plugs". Hosted courtesy Jacques Strappe, 2 stroker extraordinaire.

strappe... small world,
used to go there a lot
even have a picture of my old RD400 there if you search around a bit in the old bikes section.

---

well i did some searching and made several calls today
finaly settled on the W27emrc plugs off some internet company
ordered 12 of them delivered for 37.66
just a bit over what it would cost me for 2 speical oder BR9ECM's

also got some 135 and 132.5 main jets coming
i sure hope i get my bike sorted soon
i wanna go for a real ride on it!

my will-power is gonna fade soon and im just gonna go wring it out
and end up blowing it up!!!

$15 a plug? Why? I pay like $8.50 for the NGK BR9ECM plugs from sparkplugs.com (Monarch products).

Been using them for my plugs for the past five plus years. They have all the ones I have ever wanted, and are quick on shipping. Prices are good on top of that.

Now my RS plugs are $31.00 a pop!

Thanks,

that is where i bought the plugs from actually
i saw the BR9ECM's there for the price you stated
i was just quoting what it was going to cost me to get them from my "local" motorcycle shop.

Still the W27EMRC was way cheaper and is fine by me
was only gonna get 6 and then shipping was 10 bucks or so
so i figured 12 would be better... still 10 bucks shipping so at some point ill need more im sure.

I know this is an ancient thread, but I was looking for the plugs on Google and this page comes up on BR9ECM search.

I found the BR9ECS plug and wondering if anyone had used them, the only difference is the electrode and form description not very clear what it is

from NGK:

CM: Compact type, low angle ground electrode

vs

C: Low Angle Ground Electrode
S: Standard 2.5mmų center electrode

I guess my question is: What size is center electrode on BR9ECM plug? I can get a BR9ECS relatively cheap, and also they do not list BR9ECM plug, listing goes from BR8ECM to BR9ECS and BR10ECS

Thanks!
