MC21 Flywheel Removal

Fri May 17, 2013 11:18 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

My MC21 flywheel is seriously stuck. I used the standard puller and the flywheel won't budge. I have also either stripped the male threads on the puller or the female threads on the flywheel. It's hard to tell if the female threads on the flywheel are stripped. Is there any other way to remove the flywheel? Any tips or suggestions for loosening it?

Thanks.

Mr Skunk.
You should be able to tell if the thread on the puller has stripped quite easily, unless its jammed in there of course! Hopefully it is that thread and not the f/wheel thread, a new puller in place, with a little tension on the centre bolt, a 'nice' tap or two on the bolt should see it pop free. I left mine under tension for a while as it put up a fight. If the female thread has stripped, maybe you can fashion a puller to work off the flywheel holes somehow? Angled rods or tap two opposing holes with an appropriate thread to get some bolts in to work off?
I wish you luck mate, you'll get it off.

Eggsy,

Thanks for the advice. It looks like the threads on the puller are stripped and not the female threads on the flywheel. I'll try a new puller with your technique and see what happens. I squirted some penetrating oil on it last night and maybe that has gotten in to free things up.

are you using a puller that requires an adapter to go in the end of the crank shaft? Or does the puller have a flat face/surface to mate up against the end of the crank? Some pullers have a pointed end, which would require an adapter to "protect" the crank end.

to use the puller properly, un-screw the center part all the way out. Screw the outer part all the way into the flywheel, getting as many threads in as possible (more threads, better chance to not damage puller or flywheel). Then use the center part of the puller the pull the flywheel off. Some can be very stubborn so get a long handle to get as much leverage as possible to break the flywheel free. Go slow, and it should come out no problem.

cgallant,

The center bolt of the puller has a flat surface to mate with the crank end. I did not use any type of adapter. I'm not too concerned about the crank end because I have a new crank to install.

I used the puller exactly as you described. I applied very light oil to the 27mm male threads on the outer part of the puller and made sure it was screwed all the way in. Then I used my 18-inch breaker bar to apply torque. The flywheel would not budge. I thought I had the flywheel loose but realized the outer part of the puller was pulling out of female threads of the flywheel. The male threads on the puller are stripped. I can't really see the female threads of the flywheel very well and I hope they are not stripped as well. I'm going to try a new puller and see what happens.

Thanks for the response. Any and all advice is helpful.

In many(most?) cases you will strip the thread, if you just use blunt force, trying to screw the adapter in.

All pullers need to be tapped, maybe hard, with a steelhammer, then tighten the bolt, tap with the hammer etc.

I got the flywheel off. Thanks to everyone for the advice. Luckily the female threads on the flywheel were not stripped. I got a new puller, screwed it in, tightened the center bolt, tapped it with a hammer a couple of times and the flywheel popped off.

Now if I can figure out if 1993 CBR900RR front caliper seals will fit the NSR calipers, I'll be good to go.

You won't catch me with a hammer anywhere near the end of my crank! Surefire way to knock it out of true!

Thanks Andy. That's good advice. I'm putting a new crank in it so wasn't too concerned about it.

Can you advise on the NSR 250 front caliper seals?

An 'engineers tap' isn't gonna hurt it, if you go at it heavy handed then you shouldn't be getting involved.

Depends how true your crank is! Ours are trued beyond HRC spec, and I don't advise even putting a hammer next to one on the bench! Wink

How do you get the flywheel off then?
