mirror adjustability?

Wed Apr 02, 2014 11:33 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi All,
I have wondered about this for years. Are the stock mirrors on an MC21 supposed to be adjustable? Mine have little to no adjustability, so I always have to duck down to get a peek at what is going on behind me....obviously not a major deal inasmuch as I have waited this long, but it would be nice if they would move a bit.

And if they are not designed to swivel at all, are there aftermarket mirrors that do that also look reasonably stock and are bolt on? Thanks.

Hi Jim,

I have found that OEM mirrors have more adjust-ability over after market ones.

The real question is, do you have OEM mirrors or after market ones on your bike ? They might look stock...

Post a pic of the mirror looking down onto the stem.

Cheers,
Mario

Hello Jim, my mirrors are also very tight and for fear of breaking them like you I've left well alone, they are stock.

Mario, I'm virtually certain these are stock mirrors...I have a spare set given to me by a buddy off a stock MC21 that are identical. The mirrors of DUX sound exactly like mine, just really tight. So is there perhaps a lubricant of some sort that might help? I think I tried spraying something in the seam years ago to no avail. How much movement are others with stock mirrors able to get? In other words, what is normal/possible with stockers?
Thanks.

My mc16 mirrors were virtually solid when I bought it.
I had to twist them with a reasonable amount of force and they suddenly freed.
Plenty of adjustment, perfect and no damage.

Try some ptfe spray. I use it to lubricate push-fit waste and soil pipes together. It's water proof and doesn't damage plastic/rubber fittings. I also use it for sliding on carb rubbers, water hoses, anything like that really.

Hey thanks for the tips. Just knowing they are SUPPOSED to move helps, as I wasn't sure if there was a reason to try to force it free. I'll need to look into the ptfe spray....only thing I have is WD40, teflon spray, and silicon spray. Since I have a spare set of mirrors if it all goes bad, knowing that it is possible for them to move, I am now emboldened to go at them harder. Maybe then next time I might have a chance to see the cop with his lights on behind me! Embarassed Thanks guys.

Dont put WD40 on them. In fact I wouldn't put WD40 near any part of my bike, maybe the electrics.

PTFE is the same as silicon spray. Anything that is used to lubricate rubber, plastic, o-rings or pipes should do the trick

I have just fitted a set of brand new OEM mirrors to my MC28. They have "made in japan" written on them on the back of the mirror below a small oval with a symbol in in. That may help u with identifying weather they are genuine or not.

yep, that's exactly what I have on the backs too. Thanks for confirming! Going to have a go at unfreezing them on the weekend when I have more time. Thanks.

Hello Jim, I have looked at loads of pics of mirrors and they crack between the hole for the mirror itself and the mounting piece.

In the past using some form of lubricant to ease the movement can if you use too much give the opposite effect and you get a mirror that keeps drooping, sounds familiar at my age.

I've opted to get another mirror, my l/h is the problem just in case either it breaks or I go for the silicone treatment and it drives me nuts having to keep moving it back where I want it, after awhile the silicone will dry out a bit and if lucky it will hold position.

D. Very Happy

Well, armed with the conviction that they are supposed to move, I managed to unfreeze my mirrors with a crazy amount of force. They didn't break but did emit a considerable crack sound. The upshot is they now have moved enough that I can easily confirm while riding that I still have elbows, which, while not ideal, is actually a considerable improvement, so I'm happy enough. DUX, I only did a bit of silicon spray, so they still move very reluctantly - no sagging imminent, unlike their owner. Wink Thanks for the help, guys.
