I have finally become a menber of the broken NSR club. Crying or Very sad I guess I can't say they are bullet proof anymore. I was doing a trackday at California Speedway...everything was going great until the second to last time out. Made it 3 laps and the bike died. At first I thought it had siezed but it didn't lock the rear wheel and didn't make the typical sound when a piston siezes. Check out the pictures of the carnage. It looks like I lucked out and all the debris went out the exaust. Very Happy

Look at the pictures of the piston and see if you can figue out what happened. I think I know. Shocked

What happened,break a ring? Curious how much this will set you back,so I know what I'm getting into.

The pin that holds the ring in place moved back. Then the ring was free to spin. When the end of the ring got to the exhaust port it got caught and broke. Is this common? I have not seen anyone post anything about this on this forum or the NSR mailing list. I have seen this happen before with a piston that had the pin relocated but not with stock pistons.

Happened once to me on my MC28 and once on an MC21 I saw in Okinawa. My bike had less than 10,000km on it when it happened. Shocked

Difficult to say as they are both very different bikes to ride, that's for sure. Only you can decide that one.

If I were in the States personally, I would send BOTH barrels to Eric Gorr and get a port job on them and a replate on the dead barrel! If the port job is half as good as the MC18 he did that I rode a couple of years ago, then you will have a cracking motor, and he is extremely well priced.

The bill for my mc28 repairs which started out as a seized piston is now knocking on the door of £800+labour and VAT, about the only thing that is OK is the crank, I'll be genuinely surprised if it stays under a total of £1500 when it's done.

Mate, the results of letting just any old monkey (no pun intended) work on an NSR are not too far from you right now.

And the parts list runs something like

repair cylinder*1
replate cylinder*2
piston and rings*2
head gasket*2

powervalve oil seal*2
both crank seals
cylinder dowl*2
piston pin clip*4
air filter*1
front head*1

clutch plate kit*1
dry clutch disc*6

HRC jet kit*1

and so on

OK it may not be at the cheapest place in the world, but buying and fitting that little lot and any other bits needed is never going to be cheap anywhere.

We'll see, when my Aprilia blew up I took it to a place locally that (successfully) races them and had them rebuild it, cost me loads to say it was only a 125 and it was superb, then when I had my CBR4 setup I took it to RMD Dyno and Rob Matthews (he did Reynolds bike at the time he now works with Foggy Petronas) did it, once again it was ace but cost a small fortune (£200+ for the setup alone!).

This is the first bike I've had tht wasn't from a top dealer for top money, and it's the first bike I've had a real problem with (I wouldn't call a top end on an RS125sp after 12000 miles a problem). I've got a theory you get what you pay for, it's worked OK for me so far.

So does anybody do the cylinders in nikosil or is chrome the only choice? Well I guess I can save on the labor since I'm a mechanic whenever I get a NSR. I'm sooo close I can taste it! ( Kind of a smokey flavor with a slight oily after taste ) Wink

Eric Gorr of Forward Motion Racing ports and repairs cylinders, and has done a few NSR's. He has US Chrome plate the cylinders (Nickel silicon carbide). Noone that I know of uses chrome anymore at all.
