smoke out of right hand pipe....

Tue Sep 26, 2006 6:25 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi all,

I got my MC16 out for a ride today - first time for about 8 months. At startup there was tons of smoke out of the right hand pipe - and I mean tons - a big cloud, lasted for about five mins as I warmed the bike up, then for about 1/2 a mile on the road.

It cleared after that and both pipes were clear by the time I got back.

Does this mean my crank seals are knadgered? or is it normal - I saw the other post about more smoke out of one pipe....

Also there is a bit of bottom end noise (there always has been - well it did cost £350! Laughing Is it worth rebuilding the crank with new seals? Can you get new seals? Will it cost big bucks?

Forks a bit divey, steering not perfect but had a good blast on the thing - forgotten what fun it is to ride.... Very Happy

Cheers, Mat.

New seals for a '16 are available from a Honda dealer for £10 and £20 each and if you are in early enough the dealer should be able to get them for the next day. If you are going to take the crank out then it might be a good idea to order two outer bearings from Dietrmar in Australia, you should get both shipped for £60ish. I put a s/h crank in mine when the bearing let go at 44,000kms but I will be ordering bearings incase the s/h crank suffers the same fate. ( hope that doesn't jinx things Rolling Eyes )

Not really noticed this on the NSR yet (nmot had it long), but on my 3XV (V twin TZR - same motor layout as the NSR) the lower cylinder always smokes more - especially when it's been stood for a bit. I reason it's prob caused by the motor layout - the lower cylinder pointing down would mean that any oil in the crank cases will run down into the combustion chamber rather than sitting at the crank web end as it will on the upper cylinder. When it's standing I reckon you're bound to get a few additional dribbles from the oil feeds as well as any left in the crankcases from the last run. That's a fair amount of oil that gravity will encourage to run down and nest in the combustion chamber to freak you out the next time you start it up.

That's my theory in any case Confused . The Aprilia is the same too FWIW.

Cheers
