Im looking at getting this beast, ive fallen in love with NSRs, its my choice for my first road bike.
This is ment to be a 1997 SE going for AU$5500, is that a good price..
looking up stats on the net its rated at 45hp.. now im confused just a lil because simialr 2stroke Vtwins, like the RGV, thats rate at 60, and the aprilla 75 or around that..
i know these are restriced from reading information, and apprenty this model is the most restricted with the card swipe thing, and the only way to get some decent power is splicing in the HRC loom and getting my hands on a HRC card, now is this true?
Is there anyway to unlock another 30hp without searching for rare parts?
dose a set of pipes really add 5hp+?
Are there any solid 0-100times?
im not so much a fan of hitting 200clicks+, so whats a good toothed sproket to really give some good acelleration? somthing to give my big cc friends a jaw drop, maninly my best mate who just bought a brand new R6 for his first bike, i was thnking of doing the same but i have afew more brain cells than him lol.. i didnt find any 4strokes that too my interest cept for a CBR250RR and a ninja
The NSR was designed for 60+hp and then restricted to 40~45hp depending on model.
The MC28 is expensive to derestrict because of the HRC card, and in my opinion they never seem to go quite as well as the MC21 even with HRC help. That's in road trim anyway, airbox, filter etc.
No aprilia that I've ever seen gets anywhere near 75hp. It's pretty much a Suzuki lump. We saw 63hp on the Suzook and 64hp on the Aprilia. Both with race pipes and a bit of setting. Neither felt anywhere near as good as the 63hp NSR MC21 we tested against.
Standard gearing works quite well in town and is good for a shade under 200kmh when derestricted...probably.
Right seeing as Fontyyy hasn't taken the bate I'd better step on to the soap box in defence of the MC28.
If you like to look and the concept of the MC28, the go get it. They aren't that difficult to derestrict and to be honest I was plenty fast enough with the std card, race pipes and an airbox tweek. The thing about MC28 ownership that that you have the last generation of NSR, with the trick c card ignition and s. sided swinger. I see Matt's point in fitting a pro-arm and fairing to a MC21, but let's face it, it's the smartcard ignition system that everyone asks about. The expense is in buying the HRC card in comparison to sniping a few wires on the MC21, but seeing as you're already prepared to pay alot more for the MC28 in the first place, a few extra notes is neither here nor there.
Now Matt and Steve are performance junkies, and that's cool and I freely admit that it might not give you the highest power output compared to a '21, but for the road...it's near as damn it and I wouldn't want to eek the nth degree of mojo outta my street bike cos it'll only go pop.
Here in the UK, MC21 are 10 a penny, the MC28 is a bit special and this is represented in the prices. I'd go with the MC28 and be happy in the knoledge that you ride a great and special bike that isn't like every other CBR/GSXR/ZXR you meet at the local roundabout.
Looking at the pictures it hasn't got the correct bodywork if it's a true '97 SE. Should be those tracksuit purple and yellow colours. Check Jamie's NSR site for pictures.
Oh yes I should mention.........for performance I went and bought an NF5.
If you like the 28 looks then throw a proarm in the 21 chassis and fit 28 bodywork and tank.
At the end of the day I'm sure you'll appreciate the ease of releasing the power from a 21 compared to the 28.
All you 28 lovers can shoot me now
I've never owned a 28 personally and I never will.
hrmm, doing things like that is too much effort, as im more into doing up cars, but i want a bike for riding around town, and to work, and thrashing... plus finding parts is a no go!
realisticly how hard is it to get the full potention out of the mc28, is a HRC card really the ONLY option?
I dont really know the procedure in things on extracting power out the bike..
mabey you could give me a run through on how to hit 60hp or close to it?
Firstly parts shouldn't be too hard to get hold of. In Europe we can get parts from any Honda dealership when you use the part numbers. They are available on the 'parts manual' section of this site. If they can't help, then Matt and Paul at Tyga Performance should be able to sort you out.
Options for performance tweaks are to fit race pipes, drill a couple of holes in the airbox and rejet. Should get you 55bhp and save a bit of weight. Those std exhaust pipes you have on that bike are really restrictive and heavy.
Next could be to try the above combination with an MC21 flywheel. This give a little more advance, and might get you up to 57bhp.
Lastly the HRC card with a wire splice will get you in the region of 60bhp. but you MUST NOT run the MC21 flywheel with the card. This will advance the ignition too much and you get detonation problems. Check out Tyga Performance's website of the MC28 wire splice info. The problem with the HRC card is it stops the speedo working as well as the oil warning light. These are sometimes useful on a street bike.
I think if you like the look of the '28 and you want the trickness of a smartcard then get the bike.....4-5bhp deficiency wouldn't put me off.
Oh yes I should mention.........for performance I went and bought an NF5.
That's the spirit
A word of warning NSR-Nate, these NSRs are naughty little things and if they're not well looked after then they do tend to turn around and bite you. It doesn't really matter if you go for an MC16, 18, 21 or 28 they still all need some love and attention, so you must be prepared to get your hands dirty once in a while.
Sounds to me like you just want to get a 28, look cool, and cruise around. In that case I reckon you wanna buy that 28, grind the silly restriction rings out the pipes, slip on some aftermarket silencers and just ride it standard. Probably won't have to rejet, so no messing around either. Trouble is, you'll only have 45hp. But it'll ride nicely to the shops and you can show off your smart card to all the lemming superbike owners.

oh i was under the impression that you couldnt get any power with out the smart card, but if what you say is the case then im happy again, how can a exhaust make such a drastic improvement? if the HRC car is only going to give any extra 5or so hp then its not worth it..
is it safe running nos? 5-10hp shots?
what kind of times would i be looking at with 55hp 1/4mile 0-100
then, why do people say its had to get the power? when you are doing the same thing as you would any other bike?
have you got any sound clips of these beats, ive yet to hear one

kinda a yay and nay, i like to go fast, and dont mind getting dirty, yes i do like it cause of the look, but who dosnt like things that look nice, i dont even know much about the card, but i do like the look of the digital dash, is the card needed to start the bike? i dont really know many bike owners, just a small group and im postive ill be the underdog as they are all on 400s and 600s, but im only on my Ls so only a 250 for me ..
But if i get this bike the plan would be todo everything i could within reason to make it better..
even the oldest NSRs that are availible here are just as expesive so i may aswellget the newest ones, or mabey a older one and use the remainder on a tyga kit .
That is the TYGA suzuka style upper. $280 (aus) from tyga. As for ram air, correct me if im worng but is ALOT of work, not quite as simple as it sounds from reading one of matts posts a while back. . And as for the 21 verses 28 question, just get one of each Also if you search around the tuning section of this site and tyga-performance.com you will find answers to alot of your questions. _________________ Hesitation is Fatal!!
