HELP! MC21 almost killed me?

Wed Aug 08, 2007 3:23 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

just bought a mc21 after having a mc28

was doing 170kms when suddenly my engine shut off and my rear wheel
started sliding every where, luckily i was quick onto the clutch and rolled to about 120 then released clutch and turned it back on, was really scary

does this mean the mc21 speed limiter shuts off engine? THATS DANGEROUS!

Wed Aug 08, 2007 4:16 am » Post: #2 » Download Post

i done the wire splice today before the ride, and my mechanic said on the phone that it was a partial seize * im just lucky i roll started it at 100+kms

i read another post on similar, done wire splice and few weeks later at 150kms,
engine stoped and wheel locked up?

is this due to more stress from splice? splice requires jetting adjustments?

can i adjust my oil* screws so more oil is being injected? much help apprecciated guys,

It'll almost certainly have seized due to running too lean (not enough fuel in the air/fuel mixture), bearing in mind by doing the wire splice you added the potential for about another 30% of power not checking it didn't want a tad more fuel may have been a little presumptuous.

I also note you get fuels with some pretty low RON ratings over there, if you're using anything under 95 RON then don't read too much into anything anyone English says about jetting.

Do not run the bike. In the best case it will seize again. In the worse case it will kill you. Take this very seriously.

If it's already nipped up then there will be smeared bits of aluminium on the cylinder wall. This will make it seize again. I have no doubt whatsoever about this.

Let's just say that you're flat out again, having a blast, coming up to your favourite corner and as you shut off and tip it in, the thing locks up again and spits you over the high side into an oncoming truck. Splat...you're dead!

Pull it apart and do something about it. For the sake of a couple of days off the road, and a few quid you get piece of mind to know that the engine is fresh and good to go.

If you can't be bothered then I suggest that you don't ride over 20mph and keep your fingers very close to the clutch lever.

Hope that doesn't sound too morbid, but I'm talking from experience.

Knockhill, 1992, Honda RS125 in British Championship, tip into corner seize, over highside, two disclocated ankles. OUCH!

I was lucky.

Matt's right, I caught mine (on the clutch) just as it was seizing once and it seemed fine, kicked up and seemed to run perfectly so I set off home with the intention of taking it real steady until I'd had a look inside. Obviously temptation got the better of me though a nice little flip flop about a mile from my home and it seized properly just as I eased off after the flip of the flip flop, I pushed it the last half mile or so....

If you're lucky, the barrel will be fine, and a new piston will do the job. That's about 30 minutes work and about £70 to put right including the base gasket.

If you don't look inside, it will quite literally cost you 10 times as much when crank destroys itself.

Don't say you weren't warned. Evil or Very Mad

As Fontyyy mentioned earlier, I missed a tiny piece of something in a rushed (in the dark!!) rebuild one evening. The bike made it 45 miles... 25 of those at well over the national speed limit, then went bang about 10 miles from my front door!
