Puzzled...

God damm M7 nuts...

Why in the hell did Honda decide to use a bolt and thread size that is near impossible to come by???

In particular the nuts from the cylinder head...

I've tried 5 different fastener shops, 2 car wreckers and 3 motorbike shops(1 shop was a Honda dealership)... No-one could give me any love...

I am still going back out on the hunt today, my best bet now would be a motorcycle wreckers(which aren't that close to me) or an import motorcycle shop(which is even further than the wreckers)...

*sigh*

Buy they by part number from Honda. They are an odd size, but why not? That's all the deemed necessary on the earlier bikes and the RS250.

I expect the MC21 and MC28 went to the more common M8 to save money by using a size used throughout the Honda model range. The MC16 and MC18 design is also more compact, so it's a space-saving thing too.

The RS probably used them as they are lighter. O-ring heads that are removed after every use are probably under less torque too (not positive about that, but someone will know) so a smaller stud/nut can be used. Every gram on a GP bike counts.

M7 is used on alot of modern Japanese bikes. Again the NSR was ahead of its time.

As Andy say if you can't find them buy them from Honda. The Honda ones are infact shorter than normal 6 point M7 flange nuts so you need the Honda ones if you want to be right.

But that is just it.. I went to a Honda dealership/service centre...

They told me they did not have any, nor can they get any in, as these nuts come off a bike that is imported rather than sold here in Aus.. So they cannot source them Confused

I'm just going to have to go to the bike wreckers or the import motorcycle shop..

Any Honda dealer can order any part. If they told you that its because they cant be bothered. Go to another dealer.

Get the part number off the online parts manual and take that in. Its only a nut, they have no idea what bike its off.

You may be somewhat right the stephen...

But I believe that Honda Australia has some sort of gripe about imported Honda machines... Same goes with the CBR250RR that I own... Although Honda Australia themselves bought them in, most of them were imported, alot of Aus peeps have the same issue when they go to these Dealerships and try to get parts for their import bikes... Honda Aus wants nothing to do with them...

I never actually liked the Honda dealerships anyways and try to avoid them and other major manufacturers like the plague... I would much rather prefer to support the smaller privatly run bike shops than any dealership, even if that means voiding warranty's on my new bikes...

Either way I will get that nut...

One other thing I'd like to know if anyone can help me...

I am putting the MC18 back together after doing a top end re-build... I followed the tutorial on this forum and found it to be a HUGE help... One thing that I am unsure of is - where is this solanoid that I need to unplug and re-plug when setting the powervalves???

Its not a solanoid. You need to unplug the throttle postion sensor. Then turn the ignition on. The connector on an MC18 is under the right hand rear seat unit just under the riders seat. Its clipped to the sub frame.

Once the ignition is on the power valves will move to the set postion. Turn the ignition off, set the power valves then reconnect the TPS.

Do you have Repco over in Oz?
I got M7 bolts and nuts off the shelf here at Repco. Also seen them at Supercheap...

Repco, Autobarn and Supercrap are the major Auto suppliers over here...

I never got the chance to go out and source some today, but I'll give that a whirl tomorrow, seeing as though all three are all within 5k's from my joint...

Thanks for the heads up!!! And to everyone who has sent pm's with places to go...

I don't post up on here much but certainly do have a looksie... This forum is a credit to everyone on here !!!! BRAVO...

Where in Aus are you?

We have a limited selection of Honda parts suppliers (some of ill-repute on the forum Shocked )

Other than that, try an engineering hardware specialist like Blackwoods, or Costless Bolts.

I tried the speacialists, 5 of them to be precise... The thing that blew me away is that they did not stock any and told me good luck finding any...

But Kieran hit the nail on the head... Went to Atobarn today... They stock every single size nut and bolt...

Almost finished putting the bike back together... New top end, wire splice mod and a few holes in the airbox... I'm looking forward to being able to give it some WOT, after some heat cycling to bed in the top end...

Anything else I should do or consider ???

If you've done the airbox drilling, I would say jetting to suit.
