TA21's could be used, but why? Are you looking for a quick performance upgrade? If you are, you won't find it by fitting MC21 carbs.
Pull the black/blue wire behind the rear lights and drill a couple of 20mm holes in the airbox, and an R2/4J will make around 62hp if it's fresh. If you want more than that you need to start getting inside the motor. _________________ Andy.

not looking for an upgrade, mine came very fouled up, and i bought another set as backup, unfortunately they were ta21's. mine may be ok they spent a long time in ultrasonic tank, we'll see.

No external difference on the carb body as far as I can recall, so they will fit without too many issues. You'll need to check cable routing etc. though.
If you study the stock jet settings, the TA20A and TA21A (sorry, I mentioned MC21 carbs before, but TA21's are R5/6K) are quite different. The later carbs, in standard form, would appear leaner.
Steve's MC18 R5K was always way more thirsty than my MC21, and nsr.wayne was always going on about the amount of fuel his R2J drank in comparison to other NSR's. _________________ Andy.

my r5k seems to be a little more thirsty too compared with what other people say they're getting for theirs. probably hi 20's mpg compared with mid to low 30's for the 21. goes like stink tho so probably worth a slight loss in economy!
The '18's don't feel that crisp at the bottom of the rev range compared to the 21 (and 28 even more so) for some reason (it's not reflected in what the dyno says the bike is doing) so you probably end up using a lot more throttle just riding around normally without really realising it.
Also, how many people do the GPS wiresplice on the '21? Without that it'll never make the best power in the top gears and thus never use the fuel.
A lot depends how you ride too, Wayne and Steve aren't known for taking it easy and both have other very very fast roadbikes. There is no need to do the GPS splice if you do the orange/blue. It makes no difference once the O/B splice is done.
Hence the HRC harness for the 21 only does the O/B splice. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Although the GPS splice does effect things when the O/Bu spice isn't done, as demonstrated by Fenton's.
I expect HRC made full use of the GPS back in the day, and Honda obviously made use of it on restricted bikes to vary ignition timing, but it looks like we were never allowed all the HRC toys! _________________ Andy.
