TPS

Fri Sep 18, 2009 4:52 am » Post: #3 » Download Post

Hello, Newbie Here. Just got a slightly rough '96 MC28. Bike seems to run okay, but Error 3 flashes on the dash (regardless of revs or whether Run switch is On or Off) and red warning light directly below remains on constantly.
Could these 2 messages be related?

I've done a search and saw adjustment of TPS may be necessary, but other posts suggest that message may go off at different RPMs. Considering mine's on all the time (and plugged in) should I just not "over think it" and buy a new TPS?

Anyone got an idea of the cost and best source? I'm a Ti member. It seemed like a good idea considering I'm green and the bike needs help.

Thanks in advance folks.

Hello Rob, and welcome to the Forum.

Have a look at this thread:

http://www.nsr250.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3978&highlight=err3

The PGM-IV errors are more often reported as Err1, Err2, Err3 etc., so that probably produced a better result that you found with your search.

Still Looking

Sun Sep 20, 2009 5:48 am » Post: #5 » Download Post

Thanks Andy,

That link didn't really get me anywhere. But I did some different searches. I probably just need to get in and study the problem (ERR3 Flashing). From what I've read, it's TPS, but if it goes away at different revs it can be adjusted out. Because mine's on constantly (and plugged-in) I'm suspecting the TPS may be bad. I'm going to have a look and maybe remove it and check the resistance.

Mostly I was looking for insight from others' experiences. Anyone want to share?

The easiest thing would be to plug in another set of carbs just to make sure your tps is the culprit.

Ummm where could you get a spare set of carbs to test with????

Checking the TPS

Mon Sep 21, 2009 4:36 pm » Post: #7 » Download Post

Thanks Mike,

Before I go that far, I'm going to have a look at the TPS myself just to gain a better understanding of how it works. I'm picturing if I remove it I'll see that it's some type of variable resister (rheostat or potentiometer). My assumption is that either opening or perhaps closing the circuit all together will make the message go away.

If that doesn't get me anywhere, I may ask you to bring your thinking cap or spare parts over if we happen to meet up to go to the Two Stroke Extravaganza.
