3 out of 4 clutch rubbers commit suicide

Tue Nov 16, 2010 7:58 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi again guys,

As you know I've been doing a rebuild. All is well, engine is back together. I've dropped the old engine out and just need to rebuild my carbs and put the new engine in.

Getting back to the topic. When I tore down my dry clutch I noticed that I didn't have any of those rubbers on the last plate.

So I order up 4 with my rebuild kit and forget about it.

Fast forward a few weeks and I'm finishing my rebuild. Time to put the clutch plates back in and I remember my rubbers. I dig them out and pop them out of their little Honda baggies.

I struggle and manage to slip them on to the clutch ring.

1. They didn't really sit very well
2. They weren't evenly spaced - the clutch plate has 14 notches so I had uneven gaps between them
3. I go to pop the clutch plate in and one of the rubbers breaks and pops off. I push it the rest of the way in and 2 more break.

So I left it with 1 clutch rubber.

What's the go with these things. Is there some trick? Did I order the wrong thing? Did I put them on the wrong place?

Looking at the parts manual, it seemed like the outside splines of the first friction plate were the place to put them. Maybe I was wrong.

Advice?

Cheers

Clancy

Never fit them to mine... prefer it as loud as it can be!

Then again, I'm just a tart! Laughing

hey bro, i can't remember having any dramas with the wee rubber things when i did a wet to dry clutch conversion a few months ago. I think they fit over the outer teeth of one of the inner most friction plates - i just had a look at the parts manual and it reckons the friction/fibre plate in question has part number 22202-KV3-840, so if you slide some new rubber things onto that one you should be all good. I'm not 100% sure but think that particular friction plate has different shaped teeth on it so you know which ones to put the rubbers on.

I bet it was a heart breaker when your new ones snapped!

Well I never knew that.

Then again I've never opened a clutch rubber bag either.

Well that answered that question.

Not sure if mine's been replaced with all the same type, or they were out of order from the last guy to take it apart.

No matter.

Next time I'll get it right.

Well I solved this one.

I put the plates back in the same order they came out.

Except the last guy who took it apart didn't. The notched plate was on the outside not the inside.

All good now.
