Hello All,

My name is Sam, I am new to the NS world. I recently bought "1985 NS250R". The bike has 4500 km, with Rothman Paint Scheme. I am trying to learn from the internet with very little information on NS250R. Also, wanted to learn from this group to see if anyone can help me with the major differences between the NS250R vs NSR250s with respect to Top Speeds, HP Performance, Electronics, Ride Stability, If you saw any speed restrictions on the stock bike can be de-restricted, Suspension and other details that you think are worth mentioning, if you have ridden both the motorcycles. Not to mention, someone that I know wasn't really happy with me getting this bike. and he said there is no comparing the NS250 to NSR250. Wonder, if that is true, and these models are so different from each other. I think someone who rode both might be more knowledgeable to share their feedback. It's worth reading through the model history.

Later models have bigger diameter fork stanchions and MC18 onwards can be derestricted to around 60BHP

Parts for MC11 are fairly rare, but all later models are getting that way now. Hopefully your lower mileage means the cylinders will have life left in them. Crank seals for models are at the mercy of modern fuels

My name is Graham and this is my first post, but as I do know a bit about the subject, thought I'd reply (although 10 months later).

I've ridden the NSR in anger (quite a while ago), and currently have an 1984 NS that I restored in Rothmans Colours - I ride this as often as I can in the local hills (Brisbane, Australia). The NS250R and NSR250 are very different bikes, and a good rider will be able to go (almost) just as well on either. Though I do believe it is hard to ride hard on the NS - you really do have to be on your 'A' game to get the most out of it, but when you do, it is worth it.

The NSR (and other later two-strokes like KR1 and RGV) seem to work better outside of the powerband (i.e. lower in the rev range). They will get you to the hills or track more comfortably then the NS will. In this I mean that the Power Valves (or equivalent) do a good job in providing low down power, so that every time you take off from the lights you do not need to be 'gunning' it to get going (you still have to rev, but not as frantic). This makes them easier to ride outside of their design parameters.

The NS, on the other hand, has very little below 7,000 revs, a little above this, and then a lot from 8,000 to 10,500 revs (the powerband). To me, this makes it a Jekyll and Hyde bike. Get beaten by almost everybody in the suburbs, but then hit the hills and it seems you are on a different bike. The ATAC system just does not compare to later powervalves.

If you are looking for parts, I'd suggest first to visit Ian Wright's Classic Replicas, or other sites like Mega Zip Parts and CMSNL Parts.

I'd love to see more NS250 content on the site. In fact, there is a bit about the part the NS250R played in HRC's GP250 history in the Main Site revamp coming "soon-ish"!

Appreciate the welcome. There is very little out there on the NS250R. I'm on a Suzuki SV forum (which has a surprisingly strong following) and follow RGV sites, but for the NS, not much unfortunately. Therefore glad to discuss the NS if anybody needs information (or for me to obtain information).

I didn't document the rebuild (have a few photos). It's a 1984 model with HRC colours (white with some decals) and was imported into AUS from Japan as it had been sitting for a long time after suffering from road rash. I repaired, repainted, replaced and rebuilt almost everything, then repainted it in Rothmans Colours which I think are nicer. Along the way, have learnt a lot about the bike, and am grateful for those that answered my (endless?) questions - such as Ian Wright in the UK and a local mechanic who specialises in two-strokes.

That looks lovely, and I'd say rather rare these days. Including yours, personally I can count the number I know running on the fingers of one hand! I'm sure there are more, but no idea where they are!

Hi guys. I've just bought a NS250R MC11 here in the bottom of New Zealand. It's a little worse for wear but I intend to restore her to her former glory. I need a left rear side tail cover as mine is missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I intend to post photos of the entire resto on my facebook page when I have sourced all the required parts for this wee girl. Thanks in advance for the help

Hello Jack. There are parts available in NZ and Australia but I am not sure how readily available they are these days. You can use sites like Jauce or Zen Market to buy parts from Japan. Put up a post in the Classifieds part of the forum detailing exactly what you need. You can also make a build thread post, with photos, in the NS discussion part of the forum if you like. Welcome to the forum, I am Prelude and im sure Andy will be a along shortly to welcome you also (he's the boss)

Hi Jack,

Good to see someone else is working to save an NS, they're an awesome (but underrated) bike. The only tail cover I've seen is from Classic Replicas, but it is a whole tail piece, maybe more of a race look. Good luck in the search.
