Cylinder damage

Thu Sep 22, 2005 10:32 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

hi all..as i posted a few weeks back i had a seizure due to no oil to my carbs Mad

anyway..i have taken both cylinders off and one of them has small amounts of piston smeared on its wall.

i took it to a mechanic and he said that it was not too bad...i could get the bits of piston off by using battery acid.i tried this. i left it on for a few seconds first as i was not sure how strong it would be but nuthin happened. anyone tried this before? how long do i have to leave it. i dun wanna damage my cylinders even more..

another mechanic i talked to today says he uses hydrochloric acid.
should i try this?

any tips?

cheers

since no one will help i just went and did it! Smile
(well a mechanic gave me advice....)

used hydrochloric acid to melt of the remaining piston..it just fizzed up and that was it...
the mechanic honed the inside aswell...looks pretty good again..

however.......the pistion dug into the cylinder a very very minute amount. Sad

might need replating...will see what happens....

Hydrochloric acid (or muratic acid) is the stuff. It doesn't happen instantly but it does take the aluminium off. just be patient.

Be sure to use only in a well ventilated area 'cos it's nasty stuff.

Hmm, sounds like my ex-wife. In the end it turned into a straight up hate dont give a crap relationship Wink

When using the muratic acid use a q-tip to apply it to the aluminum, and don't let the acid be there that long. Will take many applications, but will remove the softer aluminum in the end.

Once you get the aluminum all off, you can take some super fine sand paper/emery cloth, and make sure it's all cleaned up (I use 1200 grit). I useally go at an angle as the same cross hatch already in the cylinder with the paper.

Thanks,
