braking question

Wed Jan 04, 2006 9:55 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Im still getting the hang of my nsr, i just took it for a quick ride and took up to about 80kph and tryed breaking harder for the first time. I noticed the front of the bike shake roughly when I did this. What is this a sign of?

easiset way to find out for sure is get the front off the ground and spin the wheel by hand, hold something against the fork leg close to the disc but not touching it,as the wheel spin so does the disc and if there is warpage(is that a word ???) the disc should move towards the thing against the fork leg
if not the disc is fine and it could be head race bearings or wheels bearings

good luck and keep us up to date Cool

Warp is most likely, though check the calipers aren't siezed as this won't help.

As mentioned, usually warped discs
You can usually see the distortion from heat discolouration on the high spots etc...
If they are ok, they may need a degrease - wipe them down and / or clean them off with a bit of emery cloth.
If the discs are ok, look to the surrounding areas such as head stock bearings, tyre condition and even the calipers / pads.

Breaking hard from speed - 80mph or more- on the RG makes the front get nasty to control, the wheel tries to lock up if you get too enthusiastic on the anchors.

Scary monsters.

A warped disc can sometimes be felt through the brake lever aswell. As you ride along then apply the brake it can make the lever pulsate in and out depending on how badly warped it is and how long it's been like this. Sometimes it can be heard while simply pushing the bike along, each time the wheel turns the high spot can be heard rubbing against the pads at the same spot. If it's purely a shudder your feeling it could be the head stock bearings. Try applying the front brake while standing next to the bike and rock the bike back and forwards, if they're loose (or knackered) you should be able to feel the play. (if they are, try replacing them with taper roller bearings, far superior & less maintenance intensive) but dont over tighten them what ever you do.

Mate, worth a look at the pads, im with everyone here it sounds like your disc's BUT i had a bike fail its MOT on a warped disc, but when i took her home i noticed the pads had uneven wear on them , i cleaned the calipers up, replaced the pads and went back to the garage, passed no problem, vibration had gone, the old pads had worn in a wedge shape and under braking felt like a warped disc with big vibration and a judder. worth a look! might save you some cash!

Last but not least, and I'm not being pedantic, but make sure the tyre's pumped up! Smile

Seriously, an under inflated tyre can give very similar symptoms to warped discs or loose/worn head-stock bearings.

Thanks for the advice, i will try figuring out the issue. However I rode it again later, tryed braking harder, and noticed no issue with shudder.

Taper roller head race bearings.

Mr T,

Where do you get the taper roller head race bearings from for the NSR?
The top one on the MC21 is (typically) an odd size.

I gave up looking for taper roller bearings and bought some standard ones from David Silver Spares.

Cheers

Roy.

I thought about converting mine some time ago too. Anyone else out there thinking the same? I will track the bearings down and put them in the Marketplace if there is enough demand.

BAT Motorcycles usually have taper rollers from stock, if not, usually within a couple of days... It's where I get mine.
