I've been wanting an NSR for a long time now. I'm a big two-stroke fan, and right now it seems that with a little patience and luck, I'll be able to feed my addiction.
I was hoping that you guys could tell me the ups and downs of owning the NSR. The maintnance stuff. Reliablity. Etc.
All the stuff that protains to owning the bike that I might want to know about, before I get knee deep into this.
One thing that concerns me is parts avalibility. I'm over in US, and the two-stroke market seems allot smaller than in UK.
If you guys could, just let me know what I'm up against, please.
Thanks.
Parts for the early models are becoming scarce, but the likes of Apex moto and TYGA mean the NSR will be viable for a few years yet.
Reliability is generally better than most two strokes, as it's a Honda, and also was built to be perfect, not down to a price.
Stuff does go wrong though, with the reg/rect being as likely as any Honda. Fit an aftermarket one if yours fails - they last longer!
Power valves servo motors can burn out, though I think this is more due to coked up valves not being cleaned. The knock on effect can be to burn out part of the PGM unit, though this can be fixed in most cases.
Not much else really. If you do a trawl of the board, you won't see many 'it's died on me' threads that aren't resolved by undoing the last tuning option the owner botched!
Good luck - you won't be dissapointed! _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Now what else do I hear about the NSR's being hard ro start...????
Is this an imporper starting techinque on the owners part, or a "charcter flaw" of sorts.
I apologise for not introducing myself. My name is Matt. I live in the south eastern part of USA in Atlanta. I'm actually originally from Poland. Been here for about 10 years. Currently I own a CBR600 which is my main form of transportation {that in itself is pretty rare in US...}, but I am hoping to get a NSR for play. I am hoping to do my first track day later on in the year, and I hope to pick up a NSR come next spring. *fingers crossed* My main reason for my love of the NSR is because I love two-storkes. There are very two-strokes that combine the brilliant handling with the two-stroke smell. _________________ Wannabe NSR owner.
My NSR will start first prod if ridden regularly, second if left for a few days, and five or six if any longer. I even managed to start it at Cadwell recently when it'd been stood for 9 months (just had to drain off the carbs). The rest of the NSR boys were impressed!
Some people seem to have a devil of a job, but to be honest I think bad setup or tuning has much to do with this - there's no way Honda would issue a bike that no-one could start!
Keep the bike in good condition, and it's a cinch to start. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

G'day Matt,
I'm John from Australia. Picked up my MC 21 3 weeks ago. Had been sitting for a long time and was in a very sorry state but had compression and ran in a fashion. I've now spent many hours in the shed and completed my first track day on this bike last Saturday. It ran almost faultlessly. The guys on this forum are very helpfull and I fell sure can solve most problems. They really are a fantastic little bike and will give you a smile a mile wide every time you ride it. It is fairly maintenance intensive but I'm more fastidious than most, look after it and it will look after you!
Mine starts generally first kick, never more that four and thats in winter.
