Insurance for MC28 in US

Sat May 06, 2006 3:34 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I am trying to insure my 1995 MC28 in California and so far 3 different insurance companies say they can't insure it because their computers won't except an eleven digit VIN number. Who are you guys using and what are you paying? Thanks for any help,

Are you looking to do liability or full coverage? I've had Geico and Progressive without any problem.

They are probably not doing something right. VIN numbers have not always had the same numbers as they do today. In fact the univeral VIN number only started in 1984 I think. There must be a way to insure all the pre '84 vehicles. I have heard of others that had problems, but I never have.

I've got my '93 SP with Progressive. Cost me $97 per year for full coverage. Didn't have any problems. They asked me several times about the VIN number but it turned out well.

Progressive turned me down. Geico too. I had to let my renew lapse a month until someone told me about Insuarance co who insures offroad vehicles.

I used Allstate with no issues in California.

Only problem is they do not take new policy holders for Motorcycles. They only insure existing policy holders, so if you don't have Allstate Motorcycle insurance already your SOL.

It's basically Allstates way of getting out of a lossing proposition will following the law. Each year their total number of policies go down as people drop them for what ever reason. Yet they still offer MC insurance which they need to do by law. And with all the idiots who have no clue about riding, go out and buy their new 600, or 1000 sport bike then turn it into a pile of twisted metal within 100 miles, the insurance companies just can't make money off the policies without making them so expensive for everyone that they wouldn't get customers.

Allstates way of doing things gives them a customer base of long time riders, who are less risk to cover. This keeps their customers costs down year after year. I know I had full coverage on my NSR for about $100.00 for the year.

Now I use Geico in Georgia to cover a custom motorcycle I built from scratch and is valued over 30K. I pay about $300.00 for the year for full coverage.

Progressive here too. Pay the nice lady at the front counter and here is your cert. No problem! Try a different agent or just an agent period.

I use State Farm it seems to me that they will insure anything. I have my NSR, dual sport CR500,and my wifes dual sport Suzuki all insured with them and never have had any issue.

I finally got Progressive to insure it after dealing with several people. Their computer system has been updated and it won't except short VIN's for a 1995, anything after 92 I think they said. It took a manual override with a managers approval and they had to research the bike. Turns out it is alot more expensive now, more like 400/yr for full coverage and a squeeky clean record, still not bad. When I researched insurance several months ago I just selected "other model" as the NSR wasn't listed. I tried that this time and it won't except the short VIN. When it took the "other model" selection it was only 120 bucks. Don't let your policy lapse or your rates will probably be a bit more.

I have Progressive on my '94 MC28. They just put in the VIN and added a bunch of zero's on the end. Came out to about $70 per year for Liability.

I had Progressive for my bike, then they wouldn't insure my wifes, so I switched to State Farm with no problem for both of them. I was told by a Progessive person on the phone when I was trying to insure my wifes, if you are insured with Progessive for a NSR and you have any issue with them, they will not pay. NSR's are on there none insure list. I did manage to insure with them once on line. So you may have it but it maybe good for nothing ! Call them and check for sure, you have false security ? For that matter talk to any insurer to be sure your legally covered.

I'm not a lawyer, but under contract law, if an insurance company writes it, they have to pay it. IF the contract is ambiguious then the law will favor on your side. It is the nature of insurance companies not pay, even when they know thay have to. They know that most people will never fight it. Just make sure you read the contract ca.refully.

State Farm insured my VFR400 with no problems. Farmers has the NSR250 in their database. I'm paying $550/yr for full coverage, $50/100k liability and uninsured motorist, $50 deductable - 24y.o. in S.F. I can give you the number of my agent if you want
