Hi guys,
Hope you don't mind me starting a non-NSR thread, but it is a Honda 2 stroke and you guys seem to know your stuff.
I bought a 1997 CRM250AR a couple of months ago and it's just packed up on me I was riding off road with a mate when we stopped for a smoke. When I started the bike again, it fired up first kick and I rode off. I was still in first gear and had travelled about 20 feet when it died on me. It felt like I had run out of fuel as the engine just bogged down and stopped. I tried to restart it & it kicked over freely but would not fire. I then noticed that the in-line fuel filter between the tap & the carb was nearly empty. Fuel is coming out of the tap freely, so I continued kicking. After abour 10-15 kicks, the kickstarter went solid, and now it won't kick over at all. I found what looks like a priming button on a black box on the RHS under the tank and gave it a couple of squeezes which appears to have helped the fuel flow to the filter, but the kickstart is still solid.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I already have 2 bikes in bits in the garage, including the MC21
Cheers, Mike. _________________ Warning:

Put the bike in gear and try to turn the engine over with the back wheel. If it doesn't move then your worst case senario is that one of the crank bearings has siezed. Sorry. This happened with my'16, it kicked over fine and then suddenly the kick start locked solid. If the engine isn't siezed then pull the side cover off and you should be able to see how the kick start turns the crank. _________________ it's a name, not a condition
Before you do anything else, remove the spark plug, and try very gently to turn the engine over. Whatever you do, don't try and bump it. It sounds as though you may have a hydraulic lock, in that the crankcase is full of fuel - as fuel is almost incompressible, the piston won't move...
OK, The bike's been stood in the garage for a couple of hours now, so I just went out to try to start it. The kickstart was still solid, so I put it in first gear and viciously pushed it back & forward (Basil Faulty style). After a couple of pushes it freed up and now turns over with the kickstart. Should I be brave and stick the plug back in and fire it up , or remove the clutch cover to investigate further _________________ Warning:

Sounds like its dead. Might as well pull it apart before you do more damage. _________________ james

Like Jame's said you may as well pull the barrel off as it easy on one of them and will only cost the price of a base gasket if nothing is wrong with it. _________________ Harley Davidson is the worlds most efficient way to turn petrol into noise without the harmful side effect of horsepower.
I agree. Take the barrel off - leave the head attached - and see what damage there is. All that will cost is a base gasket, and it may save you a whole lot more! _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Sorry to drag up this non-NSR post again, but I thought i'd keep you all informed.
I finally found time to give the CRM some attention. Being convinced that the problem was fuelling, and against the better judgement of several members of this forum, I managed to get it fired up . I set off round the block with it running rough, and after a couple of hundred yards the exhaust note changed and it cut out.............
Sorry for your misfortune. Thanks for the update. _________________ james
