Have I touched a nerve! It strikes me that Repsol Honda were by far the best team last year, but that Nicky was far from the best rider. We are 4 races into this season and Casey Stoner has won as many races this year than Nicky has in his entire Moto GP career. _________________ Warning:

What you've touch upon is people who mistakenley believe that the MotoGP championship is supposed to find the best motorbike rider in the world and are upset that bad luck (tyres, being knocked off) and bad choices (going to Yamaha at all) have cost Rossi his chance at beating Ago's (and Doohan's) "titles on the bounce" records.
It's not about who's the best rider of course as we all know that from the current field (and definately on on the 990 and 800cc diesels) it's Valentino Rossi by about a country mile.
The MotoGP championship is a series of races on short circuit tracks points are given only for finishing (25,20,16,13,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 respectively), no points added for bad luck, no points off for good luck, no points for riding a piece of rubbish, no points for being nurfed into the gravel etc. End of the season person with the most points is crowned "World Champion", that's all.

The way I see it, is that Rossi woulda, shoulda, coulda. He got beaten at arguably the peak of his career by a rider many are claiming to be horse sh*t... So what does that mean? Rossi is worse than that? Rossi, the greatest rider in the world was beaten at his best??
Hayden did bloody well, the same as Stoner is doing now. Any one of the riders in the top 15 could win a race on the right bike... Now who has the right bike this season I wonder?
Rossi didn't ride any less hard last year, and he's riding like a man possesed this year, great to watch. You can't tak the championship away from Hayden because he didn't go out and win every race. I'm quite aware that world championships are won by teams and not individual riders. I was just making the point that Rossi is a far more talented rider than Hayden.
The definition of champion is "a person who has defeated all opponents in a competition or series of competitions, so as to hold first place".
Having "defeated all opponents" only 3 times in his Moto GP career, I think his success is more thanks to the team than to his talent. Lets face it, he's Honda's No. 1 rider and is being consistently out-ridden by his teammate and by Melandri and Elias on satelite Hondas _________________ Warning:

Indeed, but the competition that results in the title "World MotoGP Champion" is to gain the most points over a season, not to win either the most or in fact any races at all.
Nicky Hayden did defeat all oppenents in this competition and thus is world champion.
If it was race wins Rainey would have only won twice ('92, Doohan won 5, Rainey won 3), Doohan would have then won six times, Schwantz would have won twice ('89 he won 6 and came 4th, Rainey won 3 and came 2nd, Lawson won 4 and came 1st), Spencer would have won in '84 (he won 5 and came 4th, Mamola won 3 and came 2nd, Lawson won 4 came 1st).

In the last race of the season it was Hayden's and Rossi's to see who was the best. Hayden rode like a champ Rossi crashed out like a chump.... enough said.

Out of 17 races, Hayden beat Rossi in 7 & Rossi beat Hayden in 10.
Hayden won 2 & Rossi won 5.
"Head to head man to man racer to racer", Hayden is the one who got "smoked".
I'm not saying that Rossi and Yamaha should have won the championship. Hayden & Honda won it fair and square. I'm just saying that Rossi is the most talented rider on the grid and has been for some years, (including last year). _________________ Warning:

There are races that need to be won and races that need to be finished. Being a champion is knowing the difference.
Who is the champ?
Not Rossi so he didn't win when he needed to. Since he didn't win the championship how can it be said he smoked Hayden. The only racers he smoked are those that finished behind him not the one in front of him.
