hi everyone im new to the nsr,and have just bought one with a full apex tuned engine with tyga gp pipes.the bike goes very well and im impressed with it [which is good as i raced a tz last year].Anyhow its done 250 miles since a full rebuild and im just wondering when it should be due pistons and rings,im hoping its not going to be as often as a tz.Any help or recomendations will be helpfull please. Very Happy

It really depends on spec... They can go from never needing a rebuild intheir useable life to the same service intervals as an RS.

yes i sort of understand that bit.But unfortunately i didnt have the work done so im not really sure what the spec is.I was told the cases were flowed and matched to ported cylinders and power valves, straight plug head conversion and a kiss delimiter.I was under the impression that apex were the main boys for tuning nsr's from the previous owner however ive since found out they are not trading at the moment and thought maybe someone here may have had apex work on their bike and just have a rough idea.Just need something to go off as i would not like it to blow due to my poor maintainance, thanks

I'm not gonna comment on Apex's tuning skills, however I will say that when I was running a fully modded (SS Spec) 70+hp MC28 I was changing pistons about every 250 miles. I'd put a fresh set in before a race weekend, and then a new set of rings on Saturday night ready for the Sunday warm up and race. A crank saw 1200 miles and then went in my street bike Very Happy

In the SP class there was less wear on the internals (as less power and rpm) so we would get away with 500 miles to a piston and 2000 miles on a crank (which then went in my street bike Very Happy ).

Note that all the internals were standard NSR bits, not HRC specials.

In '95 I went the whole season on one F3 transmission, although there was a fair bit of ratio shuffling. In '96 I went through 3 standard NSR transmissions, and my team mate went through two. The standard box is made of finely crafted cheese. HRC made the F3 box....nuff said.

They put my NSR togeather (std spec, story here and here) and apart from me jetting it too lean and seizing it twice since (just needed a 2nd hand barrel and piston both times) it's done about 3000 miles, a dozen trackdays and two race meets over a coupe of years. If I'd not been playing with the jetting it would still be fine (and making about 5bhp less).

Their dyno figures appear a little optimistic (near 60bhp on a std 28 card and flywheel?) but Garry can put an engine togeather.

If they've left the top of the exhaust port angled as it is std then it'll do a summer of trackdays, a season of racing or two between rebuilds no worries, if they've ported it like an RS it'll last about as long as one...

It's no big deal, they can last years or they can make 70bhp, they can't do both. Choose one.

If the cylinders are ported to hell and you don't fancy it I'll swap you for a pair of standard ones Shocked

I'm working on a motor to challenge that! Wink

Maybe not years and years and years like a stocker, but service intervals will certainly be a lot longer than that of a full-on F3. It won't be as angry as an F3 (that's what the MC16 and MC18 are for), but it will be another step up from the MC21 as it is now... and that's not a bad one as it stands! Smile

Fontyyy's pretty much correct though; you are generally looking at several thousand miles to pistons and rings on a well put together and set up stock motor, and several hundred on a tuned one.

thanks chaps.i think im just worrying over nothing its just ive never really trusted tuned production 250s as when i started racing i was watching rgv's pop every 5 mins and it put me off somewhat. Now my wife and new child dictate everything about the tz is getting too dear to run,but i still want to ride 250s so i thought why not have a go at this.hopefully it will be good and ill get out at aintree for the august meeting and have a good day.thanks again.

Run it till it sticks .. Looking at a 93 with 40000 miles on it that runs fine and has never seen a wrench Shocked
