Crank Bearing

Thu Jan 03, 2008 10:48 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Here is a picture of the crank I just got.

Photobucket
(Ahhhh, the pic phone strikes again Andy!)

You can see that a peice of the ball retainer is missing. Now, there's no way this is usable.... Right ?
This is supposed to be out of a 22KM engine. Is that all these last???

Is it ok to replace just one bearing? The others feel very smooth, tight and are quiet when spun. The bad one has no more play than the others, but does sound dry. So, if I can replace the one, can I take it to the local bike shop? Won't be hard for a pro when just doing an outside bearing..???

And if anyone has one, I'd be intrested in buying it.

Thanks, Steve

I got bloody good (hard) mileage out of mine, but it was totally buggered by the time it was rebuilt! I wasn't missing any parts on mine, but the bearings were well worn.

That bearing MUST be replaced. Get a reputable specialist to do it, no messing. If it costs you $100 more to get someone good to do a single bearing, it could save you ten times that in the long run if it is bodged by the local cowboys!

I had one bad bearing but while I was at it, had both outer bearings replaced by a pro. No problems.

Check the forum for a seller/supplier of bearings

I had that happen on my 91 KX250, it wasn't even a year old. I noticed it when it started making a whirring noise at certain RPM with no load on the engine.

Its just my opinon but 20K is about average for a NSR crank realistically. No, you can't use that bearing, it must be replaced, and by all counts all three should be replaced as well as the rod bearings. Otherwise your likely to be traing it apart again soon. But that is just my opinion.

20k is a little low in my opinion. 30k is better, IF it's been looked after.

I can't agree with that. I've covered over 25,000 miles on 3 seperate 21/28's that never had a mechanical failure of any kind. A road NSR, even one making high 50's, will last a long time.

I reckon mine was over 40,000kms when it was done - not exactly sure on the mileage as I had no speedo cable for a few years! I had looked after it though, only ever once using non synthetic oil. Even then I only used 1/2 litre as a "get me home".

The outer bearing (clutch side) on mine was knackered when it was pulled apart though.

Seems I got the shaft Confused

It really won't be worth sourcing all the bearings, then having the expensive shop work done on it..... Mind you the guy has never even seen a NSR, let alone it's crank. I don't know if I trust him breaking it down all the way. For one bearing, yes....

Maybe I need to get back on the Idea of building a "big" engine and replacing everything fresh.....

And I thought I was gonna have it easy Rolling Eyes

Replacing the one outer will be OK, but it you want maximum longevity then it makes sense to do all three.

Although it's not happened to me, that's not the first bearing cage I have seen break up. You just don't know if one of the others is going to go too.

Regardless of what level of work you have done, I would personally never take my crank to anyone that doesn't have (a lot of) previous experience.

That's what I kinda wanted to hear Andy. I'm not looking for the engine to last more than the summer really. I just want to try to get a little track time on the bike to see how I like it. The setup will be stock... So it's not going to be trying to destroy itself. I think I will try to get the one bearing replaced, if it comes apart, oh well.

The guy I will have press the bearing deffinetly knows his stuff. He does everything in his shop, from oil changes to making one off parts. 4 or 2 strokes, street or dirtbikes, old Kawi tripples, exotics, race bikes. He's had em all down there. Just never an NSR. I just don't think I'd want him replacing all the bearings for me... If it's going that far I'd try and source a crank from you cats across the pond.

You could send it to Falicon for about $600 not including parts, but the crank will be top notch (balanced and blueprinted) when you get it back. I sent my NEW crank to them.

Thanks for the info j911, but plans aren't that big for this particular bike. Not as of yet at least.
It is an ok machine, but, it has aftermarket body panels and no title. If I'm flinging my cash around, it's going into the good bike. Maybe in the future, when I sell some of the other toys no longer used(since the NSR arrived Wink ), it will be done up with good race fairings wearing some cool scheme.... Then I wouldn't mind dropping a few G's on a bad azz motor. Till then I'm going with Andy on the "it'll be ok"....

Finally recieved the new bearing from mixalisen, and all the gaskets from Tyga....

Thanks to both for fast delivery and actually having some parts we need for our bikes.

I know there are a couple things I'm not sure of on the rebuild(even with the workshop)... But that will be in the later stages... So, I'll be back for help on the project.

Till next time, Steve
