Gents,
I've looked all around the forum but can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I had started up my mc28 the other morning, started on the first kick as usual let it idle for about a minute went back inside to get the helmet and when I came out it had stalled and has not restarted since. I thought I fouled the plugs, changed them still nothing. Today I checked and noticed I was only getting a real small spark on the lower plug. The funny thing there is I was getting the spark when the engine was not being turned over. The battery reads 12.5 volts, the PGM has all lights lit and all the fuses are good. I've checked the kickstand switch and oil level switch both seem to be working fine. Before I really tare into this thing I am hoping one of you can point me in the right direction. Thanks for any help.
take the plastic cover off the side of the engine and clean the flywheel magnet things and the pickup magnet things really well regardless of how clean it looks at first.
I lost my sparks and went twatting around trying different PGMs and wiring harnesses and trying to find damaged wired etc etc with no success. Then someone randomly suggested cleaning the pickups and flywheel and im all like; they look clean to me, what good is that gonna do?! But sure enough it worked a treat and i got good strong sparks after that.
Worth a try as it takes no effort or cost. _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...
Thanks Hermit, I think I'll try it. Do you or anyone else know what type of threads the flywheel has, meaning your normal clockwise tighten, counterclockwise loosen?
I've cleaned the pickups, they were actually pretty bad but still nothing. Ive been checking with a multimeter and noticed I have 12 volts going into the PGM, but when I checked the TPS I get 5 volts. I know the TPS is working because the voltage changes when I open the throttle. I know the RC servo is working and has 12 volts to it, when I move it manually it resets like it's getting a signal from the PGM. I think I have checked everything, the ignitions coils seem to ohm out ok, same with the pulse generator, well at least there is some kind of resistance. Any ideas??? Like I mentioned it ran fine then nothing. Thanks for any help..
have you tried checking for continuity on the igntion cable from the connector to the coil to the spark plug cap? Are you sure the spark plug cap has a good conneciton on the lead?
If yes, the disconnect both connections on the coil and check the resistance of the coil.
What do you mean by you were still getting a spark with the engine not being turned on?
I have not been able to check the plug wires, that will be the next thing I check. I could see a small spark on the plug when the ignition card was in and all the lights on the displace were working. Should I have voltage on the ignition coils without kick starting or moving the flywheel. Also does anyone know if the locking system on the mc28 might have anything to do with not allowing a spark from the coils kind of like a security system might work? Thanks for the help.
I have checked and there is no voltage going to the ignition coils. I guess what I need to know, is there only going to be voltage going to the coils when I am trying to kick start the bike? Like a lawnmower, or any other thing that I've seen that uses a magneto you only get a spark when you are turning the engine over. I would think that when you spin the flywheel(magneto or pulse generator) it would send voltage to your ignition coil then hopefully give you a spark. Also how in the world are you guys able to figure out how everything works on the electrical schematic without having a sequence of operation? (what does what and what signal it's looking for)
A voltage is only applied to the coils when a spark is needed.... i.e. it will be a short and sharp voltage signal.
did you check continuity/resistance of the coils and leads?
The NSR is a CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) system, so it stores charge in a capacitor, when told to it will discharge the capacitor and that charge is used to fire the spark.
