evening all !
first ride home in the dark last week...hit the high beam a couple of times then i hit high beam again and pop i'm hurtling into an unknown right hander in complete darkness !!! BLOODY HELL !!! thank god when i flick back to low beam light is restored. underwear removed carefully when i arrived back home.
anyways...first bulb i check had blown it's high beam. so i just presume, yes it makes an ass of u and me, that's the problem. eventually sourced a new bulb, hurrah !
out again tonight, hits the high beam again, pop ! darkness is resumed. low beam saves the day !!! again...
home again and i check both bulbs...both have blown high beams. i'm guessing the previously unckecked bulb also had a blown high beam. am i right in thinking that if one high beam is blown then the other wont last much longer ? or are they completely independent and there is something more sinister to be found ??? it's just so bloomin' annoying !!!
My 28 was going from low beam to total darkness then the high beam would kick in 1-3 seconds later, made for fun times. The battery died over a couple days the other week and the lights seemed to get worse.
I haven't riden at night since replacing the battery to see if it has fixed the lights, but it starts easier, idles better and seems to feel a bit more lively.
i've no problems at all with starting, running or anything else electrical. just the high beam that's blowing.
i'll check out the battery with a meter to see if the regulator is ok and take it from there. i'll need to buy two new bulbs anyhow. just don't wanna hear my language when it blows two new bulbs in another two minutes !
hello again,
had the meter across my battery today. lovely 12v on the quiet and a nice 14.5v or so while running and revving.
however, ever few minutes or so the voltage decides to jump up to 18-19v for a few seconds then drops back to 14.5v for another few minutes.
does this indicate a dying rectifier ? thinking back to last night when i was stuck with only low beam, i remember thinking someone was flashing their lights at me ! i'm wondering if this was the increased voltage hitting my low beam ???
Yes, sounds like the rectifyer is on its way out. I wouldn't ride it till you replace, as it may fry your PGM... _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Almost certainly the regulator/rectifier. You may be lucky with a poor connection on the harness at the reg/rec, but I'd put 50p on it being the the unit itself. _________________ Andy.

Dave, I've got a jpeg MC28 wiring diagram in English if you need it. I was going to ask if you wanted to meet up for a run tomorrow, but sounds like you'll be tinkering. _________________ Rich

ayup Rich !
i'll shout ya about a run out. if i'm lucky padgetts or cas motorcycles will have a rectifier. i'll ring them in the morning. having said that...i'll ask how much they want for it first !!! i suppose the little monkeys have to finance their racing addiction somehow . on the plus side padgetts is a lovely place just to wander about and stare at stuff !
Dave, I've found Padgetts to be pretty pricey for Honda parts. If you walk along the road to the new Honda only showroom, I think you'll find an NSR500V2 and a RS250R on display. _________________ Rich

good news i think...
sourced a new regulator from the honda dealer this morning. 49notes for a sun made in japan number which i didn't think was bad at all.
installed and everything checks out fine. no peaks in voltage and a nice steady 14.5v. it wasn't running bad at all before but it seems to be running even better which is a bonus !
just gotta wait for my new bulbs now and see if it pops those !!!
