New to Nsr's. Have a few questions.

Hey Guys,

as you can tell by the title i am new to the nsr world. yes, thank you for welcoming me with open arms! Very Happy lol. anyway, ive been off and on about the nsr for the past 3 years. but i think ive come to terms with it and im going to try buy one and import an mc28 into Canada for next year. (we have a rule it must be 15 years old or older to import) so yeah as you can see i've waited this lengthy time frame out to import an mc28. now to only find an early 94 model Razz

in any case, im just wondering what the common problems are with these bikes. also, i haven't seen TOO many parts widely available here locally or even within Canada. are parts hard to come by (either here or USA)? ive also noticed alot of people talk about "nsr tuners". is it appropriate to take the bike to a strictly 2-stroke or "nsr tuner" for maintence and upgrades? or is general maintanence and upgrades easy enough to do on ones own?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

hi mate things to look for would be the usual checks like crash damage and general condition and if it rattles make sure it has a dry clutch or you will be in trouble Laughing and as for fitting parts it depend how handy you are with the spanners.i do everything to mine myself but me and mates have grown up mending 2 strokes and fords that we broke Very Happy

ahh yes that makes sense. if you are good with mechanics then it should be no problem doing your own work. well i work at an aftermarket car shop so it shouldnt be TOOO much of a problem being able to work on it.

the problem is, if i import one i wont be able to test ride it or anything of that nature. so it would be solely going on a whim. is there any way you can tell a bikes condition via pictures? i already know to look for magteks and proper body work and paint. other than that i think its going to be a surprise when it arrives.

i wouldsay just look at the model history on here and make sure the paint work is correct for model and the year Very Happy

You've got to be prepared for some disappointment, as you will never be able to spot things from photo's, most of all originality, and paintwork, let alone all the parts that get missed off pics from different angles etc, this shoud reflect in the price too, got to go and have a look if you want to be sure of anything, but this sounds like its not possible for you?? Buyer beware I would think. Smile

There used to be a very spurious imported in Canada, that promised the world, and provided some amazing photos of bikes "ready to be shipped pending customs/export clearance". Many of the bikes never appeared, and the ones that did were crap by all accounts.

I would advise you NOT to buy any bike you can't inspect before hand, unless you are spending "throwaway" money and treat any purchase as a project.

I think you would be better off finding a bike in Canada or the northern USA. Plenty of them about.

listen to Paul's advice...be prepared for some disappointment unless you've seen the bike and kicked it's tires in person...and even then...

i've imported (MC21) recently into Vancouver in and found out the motor was seized...so cost of bike, shipping + the cost of a rebuild for me now...

if you need help/info on getting one into Vancouver, let me know! good luck!

btw...can i throw in a few goodies into your crate? Wink

Most of the Japanese auctions places are honest, they wouldn't be in business for long if they weren't. It's the middlemen that import them that is the problem, you have to find a good one. Heres a PDF of some bikes when I was looking for mine, it shows any damage and condition of the bikes.

Hey dee604, I too am new to NSRs. I bought myself a MC21SE a few months ago and am enjoying it thuroughly. I had to buy mine sight unseen as I couldn't find one locally that I liked. It had a few problems with it but nothing too serious. My friend is a bike mechanic here in Fukuoka, Japan and he has taken good care of it for me.

I am from Vancouver, too. But had to move over here to get myself an NSR sooner than the 15 years. Not really, but I am from Vancouver. Isn't there a shop in North Van that imports bikes from here? I think a friend actually bought one from them before. It may be something to consider, that way you'd get to see it before you bought it.

Hope you find what your looking for, and I know you'll enjoy it when you actually get it.

hey guys!

thanks for all the responses!!! i really appreciate it. Yes there is an importer here in vancouver that goes by the name windbell. i have yet to make it out to their shop but i have heard that the products they bring in arent the greatest. i know of an awesome website to find bikes IN japan. BUT again, thats IN japan. i have a few friends in Japan but i dont think any of them will be willing to help me ship the bike over. Again, this is only going to be done at the end of this year or beginning of next so i can import an mc28. i do know a guy locally that has imported an mc21 and is giving me some sort of direction on how to do it. the only problem is he imported it from hong kong and he knows people over there. but yes i do agree that the japanese buy sell places are usually very honest. i think all said and done im just going to have to buy one and ship it here and hope for the best.

ok so aside from importing, how would i get it tuned? can i just take it to any 2 stroke mechanic? or any bike mechanic for that matter? are any north american bikes parts inter-changable with the mc28 IF anything does go wrong (engine wise). or would i be scrounging around maybe for mc21 or mc18 parts? are those even interchangable?

Windbell has a NSR250 MC21 at their shop right now for sale...it's on hold but you can put a deposit down too in case the other guy backs out. I've spoke to them before, they don't usually bring NSR's in. (usually NC30's and CBR400's) Their rational for this is that people don't know how to take care of 2-stroke sportbikes and get pissed of when the motors seize...

Aside from importing, there's a few shops in Vancouver, Windbell can help you tune, and from what I understand one of the guys at Modern Motorcycle races a NSR, so he can help out also. Other than that....you can tune it yourself using this forum as a resource! that's what i'm doing, and i'm sure these guys will try their best to help you out!
