NF5 gearbox into NSR?

Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:20 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Has anyone fitted an NF5 (1989-92 RS250) gearbox into an NSR250 MC21/28? I've found a 1989 gearbox and am thinking of giving it a go.

Interested in any advice.

Cheers

You need an F3 mainshaft, all of which (wet and dry) are unfortunately discontinued. If you come across one however, the part numbers for a dry clutch are:

23210-NH3-940 (17T)
23212-NH3-940 (18T)

Hi Dan, try sending a message to Matt at Tyga.
I seem to remember you couldn`t fit the RS clutch to the standard NSR gearbox? Anyway, Matt adapted one to fit his 300.

That's why you need the F3 NSR main shaft.

The complete RS unit can be made to fit if you have the time, resources, and parts...

Thanks Andy, Roy. Yeah, looks very neat, but you can imagine everyone in the F250 championship saying 'you're a cheat'.... even though it was still and NSR but with the RS dry clutch/gearbox fitted.

So I want to play safe (and fair?) and just fit the gearbox internals in my NSR.

I'll keep looking for an F3 gearbox then. Thanks for your help.

Yep, oddly RS cases are what is banned under the F250 rules, RS anything else (except arguablely the carbs if they're listed as F3 parts) is fine.

"If you race a TZR or NSR - because they share so many parts with pukka GP bikes you must use the frame, crankcases and same size carbs as the road bike - hence TZ engine, carbs or frame are not allowed likewise for the RS Honda. But you can fit barrels ignition etc."

Obviously Matt has an F3 shaft left over after doing this conversion, but I doubt very much he will sell it. I managed to pick a spare 18T shaft up from Yahoo! Japan, to go with the sort-of spare F3 transmission I have. My MC18 has a wet F3 box which I may sell once I know for sure the "spare" dry kit I have is complete.

I don't want to put a downer on things, but it took me 2 years to find the dry 18T F3 shaft.

There's an RS clutch cover and clutch on eBay in the UK right now, and doesn't it say only say production bike crank cases in the F250 rules? The RS clutch assembly is much lighter than the NSR (unless you have the transmission I have for the MC16! Wink) and surely the way to go for max power.

Andy

I've been looking for some NSR parts for 5 years and still not found them!

Anyway I've had a look and I can't see the advert you mention on fleabay, unless you mean the CB 250 RS one ??....

....but yes a lighter clutch assembly would be good for allowing the engine to 'spin up' faster due to less weight.

That's a cut and paste from MJ's site, it IS the rules.

Any probing about can you mix parts across models, wrong carb makes, ovalising/matching carbs etc. normally provokes a "don't ask for a ruling and you won't get one" type response.

And rightly so, to be fair this is a club race, I've been shot down for this sort of comment on the RGV forum but even the fast fast boys are seconds off the pace that's been run on stock Aprilia 250's on road tyres back in the Aprilia Cup days. It's supposed to be a bit of fun, the idea was to give the KR's that where being whooped by the 400's something to race for. No one here is going to become a GP star.

However, bearing that in mind, a second gained with equipment is a second you've not got to gain with slightly over the edge riding Wink

Well, that's just Sod's Law... there was certainly a cover on there the other day, and I'm sure a clutch too.

This guy has some RS parts on Yahoo! Japan:

Hey that's my mota!!

The NF mission does sort of fit the NSR. As Andy says, there's an F3 shaft that's necessary and because I didn't have a spare I decided on the full RS mission and clutch conversion, Simply a case of doing the welding as you can see in the picture to the RS cover and fitting the complete RS mission, primary gears and clutch. Notice there's no water pump as I like to go the electric pump these days. A few other things to do, but not that tricky

Gotta love Honda

I'd second this. I ran in the BEMSEE Thunderbike series on my MC21 at Cadwell over the weekend and was equalling times set by a pair of Aprilias in the F400's so was well chuffed. I could do with more power, but I'm sure getting the handling right will be better for me than more power at the moment. I'm certainly not going to throw £1000's at the bike as it will never match the 400's for power.

I am considering the F400's for next time though, as I'd have more bikes to race with at a similar level. The DP 250's within the 400's looks very good though, could anyone PM me more details please?
