MC18 Model ID and simple mods question.

Wed Jul 23, 2008 1:19 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

In true last minute style I've decided it's time I sort out the 18 I bought off Si.

It's going to be my track bike and I've not touched it since I picked it up having booked a trackday for next Tuesday. Shocked Laughing

I think it's a MK1 but I'm not 100% sure. regardless of what it is what simple quick mods will improve it?

the F3 linkage is the obvious one and looking at the tech section theres just 1 bullet connector to pull to unleash some more ponies.

Does the 18 benefit from holes in the airbox like the 21?

Pic below. (I've seen that little of it since picking it up it's a pic Si sent me. Embarassed )

Model: R2J

Quick/simple mods: F3 shock linkage, drop the front-end about 10mm, pull the black/blue bullet connector by the back light, and 4 x 20mm holes in the airbox, clean the air filter and dry it out.

Should have around 61hp, a nice crackly exhaust, and pretty sweet handling if the suspension is in good condition.

Si has anything else been done to it or is it just the sprocket?

There's a brand new pair of 090's, some spark plugs and a pair of fork seals winging their way to me and fingers crossed that's all I'll need for it to go well enough by tuesday.

Bodge Alert!!!

Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:50 pm » Post: #6 » Download Post

ROTFLMAO

Look what I've just found.

It would appear that the power valves have been wired open.

Should this just be a case of undoing the bullet connector near the rear light and away we go or could wiring the servo in this manner caused other problems?

Well after running the bike up today with the spring taken off there is no movement from the powervalve servo at all. I was expecting some movement between 2-3k like the 21 does. Am I right in thinking that?

Assuming something has popped due to the servo being wired open is it likely to be the servo or something else?

Most likely a dead RC servo controller. It's a separate unit on the Mk1, much like the MC16, and looks almost like a third CDI.

RC control circuits die usually due to poor maintenance. Check the RC Valves operate freely by hand, and remove/clean then as necessary.

I'll run it as is on Tuesday and hope I can keep it in the power Embarassed Laughing and then investigate further at a later time.

Andy you say RC curcuits fail due to poor maintanence, I would assume wiring the valves open would amount to the same thing.

Anything that causes a strain on the RC servo can burn out the control circuit. The most common causes are tight cables and excessive carbon build up on the Valves.

I've ridden an MC18 Mk1 with the RC Valves pinned open (with an Eric Gorr port job) and it didn't actually run too bad!
