1992 MC21 - fitting SP components on R model

Mon Mar 30, 2009 7:54 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi,
I have a stock 1992 'R' and a 1992 SP chassis with badly blown motor and no fairings etc (ex race bike).

What modifications are needed to fit the dry clutch, FR and RR Suspension and magtek wheels to my (tidy) 1992 R model?

Help always appreciated.

Ferg.

Front forks and rear shock is a simple swap as are the wheels. The clutch swap means also swaping the gear box over and often the crank primary gear as these are different between R and SP's.

Thanks - Great forum ...I am not alone!! Havnt stripped a motor yet. Does the gearbox and crank primary swap require a full motor strip - is it straight forward job? Any special tools required?

The cases don't have to be split as the gear box comes out the side. The crank can also stay in place and the gear (primary) slides (with force) off its spline once the bolt is removed.

You'll need a tool to hold the clutch center when undoing the nut unless you use a zippie gun but rest is streight forward.

When you put the gearbox back in, mind the seal on the sprocket drive, it's very easy to flip the little spring out of it's seat or flip the lip over, it'll then leak.

It's not the end of the world if it does as the seal is just a generic 25x45x7 oil seal and can be replaced with the box in place, but it's better to get it right first time.

More importantly, remember to flick the little red painted spring back in before tightening the transmission plate or you will get the spongy feeling when tightening it all up! You'll know which one when it flicks out!
