MC16 Ignition (Yes another one!)

Sun Aug 30, 2009 11:36 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I think there must be some sort of time bomb in these bikes because theres been quite a few problematic ones recently!

Anyway, I've got a little bit of a problem with my MC16...basically when it reaches exactly 8k rpm, it just stops pulling and the rev counter does a mad dance between 0 and 8k.
To complicate things, this doesn't happen all of the time, or sometimes it happens at the beginning of the ride and then goes away after about 10-15 miles.
This has been happening for a few months, but I haven't really done anything to it yet as I don't know where to start, since it doesn't happen on every ride.
I've replaced the battery, spark plugs and caps.

Am I right in saying that 8k rpm is one of the points where the power-valves are fully opened? Is it just coincidence or could my problem somehow be linked to them?
Or...does this sound like it could be the infamous cdi problem? Crying or Very sad

Hey Socket - Did you ever get this sorted out, I have a simular problem, and was wondering if it could be a faulty coil, as the rev counter is conected to the coils ?

Ruff,
unfortunately no, I haven't. To be perfectly honest with you, (and I'm ashamed to say!) I haven't really done anything to try and fix it recently, i've been away and just generally too busy! It is on the agenda though and hopefully I'll get a look at it shortly. If I find anything, i'll let you know.

I think you could possibly be right about the coils though. I had Haynes manuals for both a CG125 and an RD125LC kicking about and both gave methods for testing the ignition circuit. Basically, it has to be the pick-ups, coils or cdi. (Assuming you have already changed the spark plugs and ht leads, just in case). It seems to be that you just have to work through, systematically checking each component. You would probably be able to find such information on the internet if you don't happen to have a suitable manual. If not, if you can provide me with an email address, (probably best in a pm) I could send you scans of them, if thats any help?

Thanks, would appreciate the copies: shaneaustin7@gmail.com

After chatting to a few people, it seems it might be the CDI, as the rev counter runs from the CDI.

Thanks again for the response.
