Pissing Gas out Of One Exhaust Pipe

Sun Nov 08, 2009 3:43 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

So I rescued this NSR (MC28)with a rust sodden fuel tank. When I got the bike it ran, but was pissing gas out of one pipe, obviously firing on only one lung.

I cleaned the carbs, set the float levels (thanks to getting settings from here) and cleaned the tank and sealed with Pors.

Bike runs really well, but when I first start it, until I take it down the street and run it out, it'll still piss gas out of one of the pipes. After clearing it out, you can tell it's now firing on both lungs and she runs great.

What do you think? I've only ridden it a couple times since putting her back on the road, but this seems to be the case. I'm thinking Float Valves might still have a bit of rust behind the spring. Anyone have other ideas?

RZ Rob

Stick an inline filter in the hose that runs to the carbies, flush the carbies out again, set your float height and you should be right.

If you are downright paranoid, you can empty the tank, and use a chemical liner, here in Oz I have heard of some stuff called "Kream" that you use to stop the rust from flaking off.

BTW, she looks like a beauty, congrats on the find.

Let me guess is it the lower cylinder that has gas in it? If so the float needle or seat are worn. Or there is some debris in between the needle and seat. Chances are the fuel tap doesn't turn off all the way. So by gravity the fuel runs to the lowest point. My MC-18 would fill the lower cylinder and pipe with fuel. I changed to a set of MC-21 carbs and new fuel tap and the problem went away. You may just have something in between the needle and seat. Fuel filter would be a good idea.

On my RGV and only on the lower cylinder..gas would flood the cylinder, get pass the power valves and puddle in the pipes..Floats were set correctly. Found out that I had a bad petcock or fueltap.. It was dripping a drop or 2 every hour in the off position. I always thought that the float could stop the gas..that was not the case.changed out the petcock and that solved the problem...Hope this helps

Almost definately float needle valve but if the tap leaks as stated above that won't help. I had to drill the rivets out of mine and overhaul it.

Same thing happens to my 16. and also my petcock isn't shutting off. So obviously will be replacing it but advice that others have given will be shown to my wonderful husband who might find it useful to shut me up about my bike not doing what it's supposed to.

I had the same issue with my 16. Solution was to drill out the rivets on the petcock, replace the o-ring and then use bolts to redo it all together again. You maybe able to find a new petcock, but its not easy.

cheers,
