eletrical problem

Fri May 21, 2010 6:04 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Went to the bike shop today and finally my bike is running smooth after they changed the needle height.
But when i was almost home after a 400km ride my instruments from my mc21 stopped working. Tacho, temp and control lights went down.
I have checked the fuses and 15a one was broken so I put a new one in and tried again.
After I turn the key the fuse broke again so there must be a bad connection somewhere.

Bike will start and rev normally.

Any ideas?

I suspect the wiring loom is chaffed through and shorting out on the frame somewhere. I'd start by looking at the left hand side where the loom passes tight to the frame as it goes forward to the clocks.

Rather than keep throwing fuses in, make up a light bulb with a couple of short wires to put into that fuse holder, that way you'll know you've found the fault when the light goes out. Wink

Thankx for your reply.
I will check the wiring at the dash first thing tommorow morning.
Could it also be the regulator?

Hey Mike I talked to Pieter yesterday and he said that he had also some problems on the dyno when he tested your NSR. I had a similar problem with my mc28 when the MC18 barrels where fitted. When I fitted the MC28 barrels back the problem was gone.

So I ask you are you really certain that there are MC21 fitted on your bike?

Eh?! Shocked

That's a bit like saying "I fitted Brembo calipers and now the indicators stay on all the time"! Confused

Haha the fastman was talking about another problem I had on the Dyno before.
But that is taken care of. I have 65 hp now with tyga gp pipes, carbon reeds and a modified airbox. Pretty ok I think.

I'll let you know if I find the problem today.

Thankx

It is possible for just about any electrical component to cause a problem, but it'd be very unusual to be the reg/rec causing a short. They're made of diodes which 99.9% of the time burn out and go open circuit, not closed.

If you're struggling, unplug EVERYTHING you can, and then start to reconnect things one at a time.

Ok clear.
I bought a light bulb with wires, contact spray and tape so I will check the wires and all the plugs.

I'll let you know how thing work out.
