Fitting smaller race tank to NSR MC28

Wed Jul 14, 2010 4:14 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey guys,

I did a forum search returning advice that an rs250 (NX5) 01 model tank may (probably) fit the MC28.

Just wondering what other racers are doing, and am hoping someone may have replaced the stock tank with a smaller lighter tank.

I was thinking that an rs 125 tank or simillar might be the go, and am considering modifying / having one built??

Anyone had experiance with trying to fit an alternative tank??

Kind regards Mick

I've not heard of anyone going that far, I ust put as much fuel in as I needed for each race!

You're pretty hard core if you're trying to save weight by fitting a smaller tank!

You could go down the route of a alloy fuel cell under a fiberglass tank cover, Will soon be getting one for my NC35. A company called BMC Racing make them for the 35 but if your pretty handy at welding alloy you could knock one up yourself and a fibreglass tank cover isnt to hard to make.

There was a pic on Yahoo Japan a little while ago where a guy had done that with an NX5 tank. By the looks of it, he had to bash in the base of the tank to clear the cross member on the NSR frame, as the tank belly sits deeper between the frame spars. Also, the mounting for the race tanks are a lot different too.

LOL, I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination consider myself to be hardcore! I had a ride on a mates 125 and the thing that struck me was that it was about as wide and as light a bicycle, I liked that. I was just trying to strip all the unnecessary parts of my bike to the bare essentials and that included putting a smaller tank on. I didn't think it would be all that difficult, and it would allow me to get the other tank panel beaten so I can look at knocking up a stock set (read unrashed) of fairings.

Just thinking out loud that’s all.

I'm about to strip down my bike and look to prepping it so I can take it out on the track regularly, rather than looking at it parked up in my garage, so look out for a restoration / race prep thread for progress.

Kind regards Mick

Whoa Fontyy !!! easy tiger, no need to get the claws out just yet Smile .
Back to the original topic of fitting an RS 125 tank onto the 28, I had a look at one while at the last track day and found it too narrow and slightly too long.
I will be interested in your research results though keep me posted.

cheers

I got a spare tank cheap for my CBR400rr diesel racer because it had a massive dent in the back from some poor guy's nuts after a brutal highside.

Adam (now Amanda) retired from racing and I got the tank for $25...

anyway, I weighed it and then cut the bottom out and it weighed 60% less as most of the weight was in the base. I removed the filler cap and cut out the spout etc and welded/smoothed it off and knocked out the nut dent. Another 10%

Salvaged a gas tank from a lawn tractor which was a light resin item.

Saved 55% total weight and cost a total of $40.

A good gain for bugger all cash I thought.
