MC21 Tyga Pipes - Fitting Tips????

Tue Nov 02, 2010 8:37 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Fitting some new pipes to my MC21 on Friday. Do any of you guys have an tips that may make it less painful or is it a simple swap? Should bolt holes etc line up straight off or will a bit of bending be required? Will the stock fairing fit straight back on?

Thanks!

Spring puller makes getting the springs on real easy. The bolt holes should line up really well (mine were perfect). Easy fit really. My gp style pipes needed the rear of the fairing to be dropped down slightly (I made a pair of stainless brackets up and bolted them on). Nothing too taxing though.

I found that the chamber bodies were touching the frame in a couple of places, so I ground a bit of aluminium away so that there is no contact. Especially here:

I also found that I couldn't run the standard pegs because the rear brake would foul the right chamber as soon as I touched the brake pedal:

I also find the chamber to sit very close to the swing arm, but it doesn't touch it:

Thanks for the tip guys. I had today off so managed to get them fitted with the blue weave carbon end cans (kindly supplied by Gavin at Jap4). The expansion chambers fitted a treat, but the back end of the pipes needed a bit of manhandling to get the end cans into the brackets. It's all done now and it has a nice ring-a-ding-ding sound to it. Not riden it yet as it's peeing down here. It is also a bit dirty from the ride out this morning for some new BT090s.

It's really coming along now, so I will give it a good wash this weekend and get some photos. Fingers crossed for a sunny Sunday for the Ace Cafe.

Nothing new there then, eh Tom?! Laughing

Funny thing is, you stand there with a (insert any tool here) in your hand and a blank, sad look on your face, and everyone takes pity on you and takes over... yet we all know you're more than capable of the work! How do you do that?! Very Happy

Year and years of practice........

I think it's just Steve, you, Fontyyy, Wayne just don't have the patience to watch me do anything!! Probably the same as me when I'm watching my boys do their homework.

Yep, they went on fine Tom. I forgot to get any gaskets for the manifolds, but used the old ones and they sealed up perfectly. Pulling the bottom cylinder inner spring was aa bummer, but a but of wire wrapped round out and a good tag down done the trick. I polised them before putting them on, so they look really clean, but have lost their weld stripes. Can't win them all!

Mine weren't a problem, and I could have run them without any modification, but I'm fussy about metal to metal contact.

Years of jet ski racing have taught me to be over cautious - especially with exhausts.

Any slight faith I had in Tom was lost when he asked if the "clunk" his crank made (motor in the bike, both barrels off) was OK. The thing would spin about 40*, lock (with a clunk) so you'd turn it back 5* and it'd spin another 40* or so.
That's never going to be a good thing.
