Was driving past the bike wreckers around the corner from work the other day with the bloke i work with. He wanted to stop and have a look for a carby for his z250. So we pulled up and went in for a look. He got his carby and I left with a nsr150sp, $375, had been stolen and recovered by the police, had no fairings, 8000km on the clock but in relatively good condition otherwise. Grabbed the work trailer picked it up and took it home.
Got home and started to look it over. No compliance plate and the engine number had been ground off. Bit of a set back since i was planning on registering it. Managed to find a frame with compliance plate at another wreckers for $395 so no problem there, just more work than i was hoping and need to sort out getting an engine number stamped.
So now i have a project on my hands. Totally rebuilding it. Pretty daunting since ive done nothing like this before. I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me as i'm sure i'll have lots of stupid questions. _________________ You can't beat city hall, so burn the f@$ker down
Decided to try and start it up. Drain and changed all the fluids. Bought a battery, whacked it in, turned the ignition on and gave it a kick. Nothing. 5 - 6 kicks later still nothing except for fuel running out the carby drain pipe and out the air intake on the carby. First stupid question. Is that normal? I pulled the bottom of the carby to check if the float was stuck but it seemed fine.
So anyway, i turned the tap off till it stopped dripping and figured i'd check the plug. It didnt look too bad so while i had it off i figured id check if it would spark. Gave it a kick and no spark. Spent hours looking for a wiring diagram. Best i could find was a nsr150rr. Close enough. Noticed there was supposed to be 5 cables coming from the cover where the magneto is but i only had three. Pulled the cover off and the pulse generator was missing, plus they'd snapped a bolt head off when they removed it. Leaving the rest of the bolt in the cover. Second stupid question. Do you buy the cover and pulse generator as one unit or does the pulse come on its own. If so how to remove the other bolt as it looks pretty well glued in there. I was thinking of just drilling it out and using resin to glue another bolt in. Does that sound okay?
I also noticed that the nut on the shaft had been cross threaded and was on crooked. Any tips for removing it? Am hoping its just the nut thats stuff and not the shaft too... _________________ You can't beat city hall, so burn the f@$ker down
Personally, if this was my bike, I'd give up on the engine and use it for parts, you may find that the process of buying individual components will eat up your money and you could have bought one that runs at a much cheaper price
Having said that, if you're going to persevere on, there should be no fuel coming out of the overflow, I was going to say oyu have a float height issue initially, but based on the condition of all the other stuff I would say check your carbs first. Crack it open and see what it is like.
You should be able to buy a pulse generator on its own.
Yeah its the one from Brisons. For $375. They still sell for over $3000. its not gunna cost me anywhere near that much to get it going and registered......
a good second hand motor is around $800. the pulse generator from wreckers is only going to cost me $50.
I plan on changing the carby anyway and can get brand new pwk 33mm for around $200 from the us.
not worried about the spray job since im buying all new fairings for it and have a 2nd frame to put it all on. dont wanna buy a working bike cos well, wheres the fun in that. i like building & fixing stuff. And even if i buy one from ebay or gumtree for cheap its still likely to have just as many problems.
Neal, your in South Africa?? hmmm. how much would you want for the whole bottom end? And any idea how much to send it to Sydney Australia? _________________ You can't beat city hall, so burn the f@$ker down
Bad News from Honda. Cut and pasted from email sent by Honda Australia.
Dear Todd,
Sorry for the delayed reply to your request regarding compliance on the NSR150. Unfortunately, even if you restore this unit, it will not be eligible for registration here. There were extensive modifications made to the NSR150's that we imported and each one was logged with the Dept of Transport in Canberra.
As your machine was imported by a wrecker, it would have been imported for parts usage and is not elgible for a compliance plate. It is also not eligible because it was not one of the units that was intended for this market.
So, I am sorry for the negative response, but I'd stay away from it if I were you.
Best Regards
Greg Snart - Engineering and Compliance Manager
So ummmm.... what to do????? _________________ You can't beat city hall, so burn the f@$ker down
I can probly still bluff it through rego since ive got a frame with compliance plate to transfer everything on. Don't really want to spend the time and money to find out i cant though..... Anyone wanna buy a cheap NSR150SP for parts or to fix to be a track bike? lol. $375 and its all yours.
spoken to a few people and i should have no trouble registering it if i swap everything over to the other frame. So going ahead with it. Will post a link to photobucket (when i find my usb cable for my camera) of the bike when i got it and what ive done so far. which is basically only cleaned all the rust off chrome using scrunched up aluminium foil and water (yes it actually works, easier and better than steel wool and doesnt leave scratch marks) sanded back and polished some of the alloy. Next up is ripping out the motor. Cracking open the crank case somehow and rebuilding both the bottom and top end. Hopefully all i'll need is a new crankshaft, flywheel locknut and seals.
planning on polishing the rims and frame as well. Is it better to have them sand/soda blasted or will industrial paint stripper be upto the task?
also alot of the bolts etc look pretty ****, rusted or completely black. will they polish up okay? or should i just replace them. I may even just sand them back and spray them matt black but i think shiny shiny would look better, especially the bolts for the fairings.
I think next time i'll just buy another gas radio control car to build. alot less trouble _________________ You can't beat city hall, so burn the f@$ker down
