Hi
I am looking at an NSR at the moment at a dealers (I don't think that I am allowed to say where!). The dealer has been good enough to send to me some large pics of the bike and from the photos it does look good.
I know that it's an R and would prefer an SE but if it is as good and clean and genuine as it looks then I'd be happy yo take the plunge. I would have to buy on spec' as it is too far for me to travel before Christmas.
The chassis number is MC21-1013537. What does this tell me please.
Thanks in advance

Mike, hold out for the SE/SP that you want. NEVER buy a bike on spec, and given the reputation of certain dealers lately (I could take a guess who it is, and there's currently no restriction on mentioning dealer names), I'd NEVER advise buying a bike without seeing it (and hearing it run) in person.
You seem to be desperate to spend your money, but you'll end up with an R model, and before you know it looking for adjustable front and rear suspension and a dry clutch kit! You'd do as well to hang on for a bit, in my opinion.
If you do buy it, get a warranty, even if it's only a 3 month parts warranty, and thrash the living daylights out of it as soon as you get it, as they seem to be selling crap of a spurious origin more often than not! If it's who I think it is, then at least 2 members here have had cranks fail in their bikes not long after buying them. _________________ Andy.

Thanks for that Andy, I was beginning to feel persecuted
The dealer in question is the Ducati delaership in Manchester.
You ARE dead right though, I am impetous, it's in my nature unfortunately. I suppose the reason is that I get the feeling that if I wait for too long they bike that I want will be out of my budget...and also I want one to ride while I do an engine rebuild on Noodle. Not that there is anything wrong that a set of pistions/rings and seals won't cure.
You are also right, I should wait for a SE/SP!

What does Les have to say about a rebuild? I didn't think it had done that many miles since it was built... I'd trust his word over a dealer if he tells you it doesn't need it.
It does seem like NSRs (and 250's in general) are increasing in value, but you're never going to retire on what they make (not in our lifetime anyway!), I don't see them rocketing. If you need to wait 6 (low season, winter) months waiting for something to come up, I don't really see the problem. _________________ Andy.

To be honest I think prices have levelled out or even dropped a bit at the moment. Andy is right though you need to be patient, something will come up. You know as soon as you buy that 21r you will see an se or sp come up for sale!
Dito what Andy and Paul have to say they are wise words, just look at it that you have 4 months left before the good weather returns. Well maybe wishful thinking but you get my drift.
That's what I need every now and then...a good 'bringing back down to earth'
Andy, I have spoken to Les and he agrees with me that it would do no harm to take a look. There is the old adage that says, if it ain't broke don't try and fix it...there is ALSO a little saying that we used in karting and that was..'better to take it apart yourself than let it take itself apart....you will always do a better job!'
The bike runs well, it is low on compression and is a b*stard to start when cold. I am more than happy to do this work, I know that I'm starting from a good base with this one.
I'm not a collector by the way, I just realised earlier in the year that my Striple was losing money month by month and I could ONLY ride it, not tinker.
I would find it VERY difficult to take the word of any dealer etc. Been there and done that.

I waited more than 5 years to get my first NSR Very hard to find one in the UAE but I did get the oppurtunity to by a 28R in December 2010...the urge to buy it there and then was incredible but I decided against it...sure enough in February 2011 a 28SE appeared and a few months later a 21SP, they were both bought
