Having connected an oil pump back to one of my mc28's I am having trouble getting it to work. The bike has been run by the previous owner for some time with the pump in place but blocked off and running pre-mix.
I was hoping to put some oil bottles, pipes etc back on, bleed the pump and get it running back with the pump. Problem is I have bleed it all, I get a good flow out of the bleed bolt but when the bike is running I still get nothing pumping out. Could it of burnt the pump out running dry? Is there something I am missing?
Anyone got a spare they can sell me or lend me that I can try? I have several spare pumps but they are all off older models and don't have the extra feed for the crank bearing?
Leigh,
it does take some time to see oil coming through.
Especially if you haven't filled the oil hoses going to the carb manifolds with oil (I use a syringe to fill them up).
If I were you, I would remove the oil pump for a clean up and also check that the oil shaft is still in it's place... _________________ 2t-racelab.com
I have removed the feed until oil is flowing properly, removed the shaft until oil is flowing and then removed the belles screw until oil is flowing - all as per the manual. Then run it for a good few minutes with no sign of any oil being pumped.
The oil hoses are not connected at the moment I was just hopin to see oil coming out of the actual pump. Maybe I should try connecting them as well.
The oil pump is connected to the throttle via cables, right? If you are running the bike on idle without adjusting the oil pump shaft to pump more oil it will take some time. I allways turn the shaft connnected to the throttle for maximum oil output. Then you can see how the pump pumps small amounts of oil through the hoses in intervalls when idling. _________________ MC21, GP-Replica (Daijiro Kato, Telefonica Movistar Team 2001)
Try with the cap off the tank, there's a vent that may be blocked.I'm open to correction, but i'm sure there's a strainer on the supply line, could be blocked, also does the soleniod work?,power connection o.k?
Have a look at the power supply circuit from the loom to the solenoid for continuity, try a temporary supply to the terminals of the soleniod, otherwise try another pump assembly. As for the function of the solenoid itself,I don't know
Right...checked the power to the solenoid, it only gets power when the engine is running. I then connected an old mc21/mc18 pump (with small cover removed and the solenoid retracted when the bike started. Took off the mc28 pump and removed the cover, looked a bit gummy inside and the solenoid did not move, but it did look stuck in the in position? I have left it to soak in some parafin over night and will try to give it a better clean in the morning....hopefully that will fix it .
Well the solenoid is now working, all nice and clean inside, bled again, fitted and started the bike, still nothing out the nipples where the oil lines go.
How long should it run with the pulley fully open before I see some oil come out? I ran it for a few minutes but still nothing.
I'd still check the oil strainer and swop the oil tank over from another,to eliminate the possibility of a blockage.I know the lines bleed to the pump body, but may not flow if there's a restriction on the suction/return.Maybe turn the pump shaft with a drill, see if you get a flow?
Good call, connected up an old pump to a drill, quick drain using just the drain bolt. Then attached to a drill and it pumped away nicely. Tried the same thing with the 28 pump and nothing.
So pretty much confirmed its the pump that's knackered or blocked up somewhere. Is it worth trying an ultra sonic clean or just source another one? The oil pump is the last thing I want to fail or be worrying about!

I am not sure about the solenoid, what is it for and how can I test it?
Cheers
According to the manual, the soleniod current is switched off at 7000rpm,allowing the pump stroke to increase by retracting the pin off the drive, similar principle as variable valve timing.
