which lights come on with ignition???

Sat Mar 31, 2012 5:18 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi,
Sorry for the bone questions but this is the first time since I've had the bike its had both an ignition switch and battery! I'm just checking out the electrics at the moment and having a few issues! The neutral light and oil light don't come on with the ignition switch set to on? Should they be on?? Yes the bike is in neutral, and the oil tank is empty at the minute. The neutral light doesn't come on if the connector to the neutral switch is grounded either and I would have thought the oil light should come on as a test function regardless of oil level??? All bulbs in the instrument cluster have been tested and are all ok. All the other instrument cluster bulbs illuminate, ie both turn / hi beam and back lighting so I doubt its the instrument cluster wiring.

I can't start the bike yet to see if that makes any difference as I'm a few days away from that milestone/headache!!

Any help would be thankfully received,

Cheers

Paul

On my MC18, with the engine off and the ignition turned on:
The neutral light will be on (if in neutral)
The oil light will be on for a few seconds and then turn off if oil is above reserve level otherwise it will stay on.
Turn indicators will work if activated
Head/tail lights and full beam indicator light will work if activated.
Brake lights work if activated
Horn works if activated
If powervalve is not in the "low" position, and engine kill switch is set to "Run", then powervalves will rotate to "Low" position.
However, if the TPS wires from carbies are disconnected, and engine kill switch is set to "Run", then the powervalves will rotate to "Hi" position.

Thanks, at least that tells me there's an issue! Everything else you've described works as advertised, ie turn lights, brake lights, high beam horn etc. the rc valve servo rotates to the lo position if positioned to hi etc so there's a problem with the neutral light circuit and the oil light circuit.
I'm guessing the oil light is a level indicator from the sensor in the oil tank? Are there any electrical geniuses out there that could point me in the right direction? I've looked at the wiring diagram to see if there's a common link etc but can't see where the issues might lie! Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
Paul

Have you got a PGM2 MC18 Winton? The oil light on my PGM1 MC18 doesn't come on when I start the bike but I tested it and it comes on if I pull the sensor out the top of the reservoir so I think it's working. I just never let the oil get low anyway....

The kill switch was in the run position. I've solved the neutral light issue, a poor connection at the plug on the subframe! And I think my oil level sensor is goosed!! If I short the wiring harness plug out the oil light comes on s it should so voltage is getting that far, as soon as i plug the sensor in theres no light, regardless of the float position.

Anyone disagree or have any other suggestions??

If not it's another item to add to my ever growing list of things to find!!!!! At least it doesn't stop me from trying to get it running in the next few days!
