Oil Injection dilemma.

Sun Oct 07, 2012 9:42 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello All.
I've recently brought a 89 MC18 RGM2, finally done everything on it just about to go get rego in a day or two.

When I was buying it, the guy who didn't ride the bike for 5 years prior to selling said this "I think the oil pump shot so I rode on premixed".

Today I was looking at it, and it seems to be disconnected, would anybody tell me how hard it is to test it? Or is there even a point at all?

I mainly ride short rides, just a round town bike, however i do plan on going some cruises later.

Any and all input will be appreciated.

It`s unlikely, but it`s a mechanical part, and so can be susceptible to failure.

Undo the screw on the top of it to bleed any air from the feed line, and hook a drill to the shaft and spin it up to see if oil flows from the injector nozzles.

You won`t get a stream from them, you`ll just sort of get `drips`. Haven`t seen many genuinely failed oil pumps.

There's no point riding with a broken oil pump and no premix. You WILL sieze.

Oil pump failure is very rare, though of course it can happen, especially if it's been left standing outside, or thrashed mercilessly with chepa oil and a ham-fisted owner in charge. Even Honda can't beat stupid ownership!

If you do as NSR-Lizard suggests, you should be able to tell if the pump is working.
