Gearbox and Engine Mounts

Wed Mar 06, 2013 8:13 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello again. Brands track day today, first NSR outing. Super fun I gotta say mixing it with the power lords into and around the corners. Few issues to sort but that was the reason for going. Brakes? No need. Fantastic!
Having never ridden an NSR before I wondered if you could let me have your transmission feelings, ie, smooth, clunky, very clunky verging on ridiculous.
Also engine mountings, I seem to have a fair bit of play in mine. Not having one to compare with, are they known to have play? I don't mind replacing them but I'll be cheesed if it's no better afterwards.
Thanks for your time.
Eggsy.

I find my gearbox smooth as silk, but then I also ride BMW GS, which is the complete opposite. Have you checked the oil level, and do you know what oil is in it?

Eniune mounts do have some give in the rubbers as a two stroke engine is prone to vibrate, but there shouldn't be any more than that. I've never noticed the engine feeling loose in the frame...

A clunky transmission can be caused be a couple of things.

Most common from my findings is that the torque arm between engine and swingarm axle is worn out, allowing the engine to twist in the frame.

Worn engine mounting rubbers can also allow the engine to move around a little, but the stock Honda rubbers are pretty good. HRC supplied more rigid rubber mounts, which work well and doesn't cause any undue vibration.

Bent shifter forks can also cause things to go a little clunky.

Old or low oil (as Dave pointed out) certainly wouldn't help either.

Thanks gentlemen for taking the time to reply. On taking my clutch out I see I have extremely grooved inner & outer baskets, prob require new ones as the outer is more than a file dress up.
This is an mc28, do they have a torque arm? I will check the parts list and see.
Oh, and I lost the nut off the front cyl power valve plate, maybe thst explains my intermittent 9500rpm ceiling!

Found my torque arm, had a very quick butchers. Looks like a nice bit of movement at the swingarm pivot, need to check rubbers properly. That coupled with my basket woes won't be doing me any favours (at nearly 300 quid and a months wait, I'll be busy with my favorite file this weekend I'm thinking!)
The oil was new, but it's out now anyway.
Thanks again, I appreciate all the pointers.
Eggsy.

Hi Eggsy
I have an MC28 too, and when I first got it I thought the gear change and transmission was harsh.
Never remembered it being like this when a had an MC21 sp.
Then a mate of mine pointed out that like his NC30 the pro arm units don't have a cush drive in them and therefore all the thrust etc is taken up by the chain..
He said that keeping the chain clean and well maintained is essential.

it all made sense when I swapped between cush drive bike and the MC28..
sometimes it seems smooth them other times notchy.

On another note Eggsy,
What model MC28 do you have?
Is it still restricted? Or full power? Road legal or track only?
Mine is standard at moment, but I'm in the process of arranging mine to be derestricted, and when I do I'm thinking of maybe tacking mine on track day or two..
So be keen to hear how u get on.
Cheers mate

Hi Tadpole.
My bike is a 94 Rothmans, it's road legal, taxed etc, but I've removed the undertray, indicators, headlamp etc, as I want it for a track bike. I've made a new battery/undertray for it and taken the sidestand off coz it wouldnt work with the spaced out fairing panels.
Its not fully de-restricted yet, I've got an HRC card so its a case of getting it sorted to the PGM. So far it has pipes (hence the spaced panels) 2 degree key, 2 x 20mm holes in the airbox (didnt wanna go too far just yet) and jetted up a little. Runs reasonably well, never rode it standard but it needs some fettling, new rings too I think. Upper cylinder is running quite lean compared to lower, it was the lower that lost its RC valve nut but I'm not sure that richened it up.
The gearchange is appalling. I had an NC30, very slick by comparison to NSR. At Brands clutchless up-shifts were ok, but changing down was shocking. I've got the hub & basket off at mo, ideally they need replacing, not sure they'll clean up, new plates coming. I'd like to see less play in the mounts, but if Matt@Tyga reckons the standard ones are pretty good, it'd be nice to see another to compare.
