MC21 running hot in idle

Tue Apr 30, 2013 4:32 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I started my SE today, FIRST KICK! After a long winter.
It wouldn't accept the gas at first but after running 5-10 minutes, with a little Injection Jet Cleaner added to the fuel it ran perfectly.

I then left it at idle, running it up to 6-7000 rpm, once in while and noticed the temp going up to almost 100 C. I don't remember seeing this before but then I always used to go on the track when I reached 60 C. I set a slowish blower in front of the radiator and the temp dropped to 90 C and I could feel a lot of heat coming off the radiator, so I guess the pump and circulation is OK.
If there is a problem, the only thing could be a partly blocked cooling system but I can't imagine what could block it.

Is it normal to go 100 C when idling? Air temp was about 16 C.

Any experience with this?

100C? Isn't that boiling (sorry, I live in prehistoric times where we use some system that makes no sense at all)?

I would say you don't want it that hot. I know at anything above 65-70 I would be thinking I needed more air or risk damage.

I would also question the concept of adding Injection Jet cleaner to the fuel. Not sure how that will "mix" with 2-stroke oil (or not). Probably better off pulling the carbs out, making sure nothing has blocked up the jets and go from there.

As for the overheating, I would suggest draining the coolant and checking the thermostat to make sure it's operating properly and allowing coolant to flow through the system.

I know that on a hot day in traffic, idling, mine reaches almost 100C.
Then once I get moving a bit the air flows through the rad and it cools down instantly.

There are no electric fans to draw air across the rad fins, without airflow, the rad is really quite useless!

Bear in mind that in a pressurised system, water will not boil at 100 degrees C.

(Nor would it freeze at zero if pressurized).

That temp is pretty normal considering you had no airflow through the radiator, so the system was relying on convection into the static air and surrounding bits of bike.

Get the thing moving through the air and you should see the temp drop rapidly.

Thank you guys. It might be normal but I'll check the thermostat anyway, before installing the tank.
