MC28: Is Ross White/Purple 1996 Model "Type 1" or

Sun Aug 18, 2013 7:52 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello Everybody.
I am located in Germany and new to this forum.

In a state of insanity I have bought an MC28 MY 1996 as a companion for the RVF 400 I already own.
Sadly, original owner had removed ALL the stickers worth a few hundred Euros because a few were scratched after he dropped the bike.
Because apart from this the bike is in very good condition, I would like to "restore" it to its original appearance. Various online shops list all of the stickers as available but I guess this might change as soon as I try to order them.

My "biggest" problem at the moment:
The NSR-World online parts manual for the MC28 2T lists two types of colour schemes but I could not find out whether the white/purple scheme is type 1 and the /white/sparkling red scheme is type 2 or vice versa. I need to know this definitely before I can query for availability and prices.

I expect around 800€ which isn't exactly a bargain, are there cheaper sources for these stickers, e.g. "from China"?

Thanks,
Gepe.

Bikes are both coded white, NH196, and the front fenders don't give away any hints. However, if I had to make an (un)educated guesstimate, I would say the white/violet is "Type 1".

It's like Andy says. It seems like the only way to find out is to have the japanese parts manual which covers that model year. They have sort of a "mapping" in there.

My guess would have been type 1 is the Sparkling Red. Wink

I'll wait a few more days and if no one comes up with solid info I might have to order one of the cheap stickers and see what colour it has and then figure out which "Type" is which colour.

I have all the Japanese manuals... workshop, parts, and HRC, and then some more. Nothing, not even the NSR Style Book tells you. My guess is based on the info in the Japanese manual. The white/violet is shown in the index before the white/red. The logical conclusion would be that Type 1 comes before Type 2.*

Your best bet is to order the smallest, cheapest coloured sticker (maybe the one off the bottom edge of the fuel tank?), and see which version comes! Wink Then you will be able to come back and tell everyone which is Type 1, and which is Type 2!

Let's try anyway.

I have a pdf copy of the 1994/95 parts manual and once you compare the information with e.g. an English copy of the cbr600rr model I think the mapping between colour codes from the frame sticker and the "Type n" in the part lists gets clear. I had prepared a screen shot of the respective page with explanations only to find out that I cannot post pictures. Well, I will then try to explain without a picture.

The colour code sticker on the bike's frame shows the model number (e.g. "NSR250R" and in a circle the year specific model code e.g. "2R"), the base colour as "color" (e.g. NH-196 for Ross White) and the "colour code" which is a combination of the base colour code and the other colours used, e.g. "NH196HA" for Ross White/Uranus Violet(P9) or NH196KB for Ross White/Sparkling Red (R127).

Each Honda manual has a Color Table on the first few pages where all the colour specific parts are listed per model code.

The NSR250R SE MY 94 has the model code "2R". The 2R was delivered in two colour codes in that year, NH196HA and NH196KB as shown e.g. on page 76, G11 Fuel Tank.
My bike MY 1996 also has colour code NH196HA.
From the little table on this page it gets clear that colour code NH196HA is type 2, NH196KB is type 1, at least for MY 94.
Maybe it's vice versa for 96/97. Maybe someone with a 96/97 parts manual can have a look at the small table on the Fuel Tank page?

Even though I do not know from the parts manual what a bike with a certain colour code looks like, I think I can identify which parts I have to order for that colour code.

I forgot to mention this:
The actual colour that goes with the base colour can be found out from the parts manual's Front Mudguard page:
The mudguards are not listed as Type 1, Type 2, etc. but instead with their actual Honda colour code, e.g. "P9 Uranus violet" or "R127 Sparkling Red". When you now take the part number of the violet fender (61100-KV3-950ZD) and look this up on the colour code pages at the beginning of the parts manual, you can will find that this is the fender for a 2T model year 96/97 with colour code NH196HA and Type 2.
If you do this vice versa, you can find the actual complementary colour hidden in the colour code.

Warning: The colour codes (e.g. NH196HA) seem to be re-used over the years i.e. while the base colour (Ross White) is unchanged, the complementary colour might change from one model year to the next!
A NH196HA bike MY 94/95 has a PB231 Real Blue fender while a 96/97 NH196HA bike has a P9 Uranus Violet fender!

Well I for one am extremely happy you sorted this out Gepe. It's a question I've been obsessing over since I bought my R2T. I misunderstood your initial email - when you said the bike was basically in original condition, with the exception of the stickers, I had assumed it must have the original mudguard on the bike Very Happy
