I have recently bought a 1992 RS250 NF5 SPL. It is not a full works bike with the banana arm etc, but a customer specification bike with the SPL engine, ignition, frame, pipes and a few other bits. It has its own parts list / manual that specifies the frame and engine numbers as SPL, but there is little information available about these bikes and I understand that they are quite rare. I have not ridden it yet but have been told that there is a big difference between the standard NF5 and the SPL. I have only started and run the engine and can say that it has a rather fierce BARK. My intention is to restore the bike and obviously ride it when its ready. Does anyone have any information about these (like how many were manufactured and what sort of power they made back in the day)?
Thanks
Deon
Deon, interesting purchase. Do you know how many miles are on the crank? I read that the SPL has a unique crank to accomodate the SPL ignition, if so expect spare cranks to be pretty rare. Even standard NF5 cranks are very hard to find, also original pistons. _________________ Rich

That's a great find, but don't expect too much out of it. The factory bikes were always a few HP up on the RSs, but there's no magic.... an NF5 is an NF5! 80hp only came with the later 72 degree motors.
An [un]educated guess would give an SPL kitted NF5 maybe a couple hp more than a good "normal" version, but nothing more. It's more about the trick bits. Better frame, stiffer swingarm, better clutch and ignition. Very very small differences, that all but a top level racer would ever notice.
Still great to have though. _________________ Andy.

I had/have a SPL manual somewhere as I got a few SPL bits for the F3 at one point, crank case bolts etc. I'll see if I can find it. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...

Well seeing as you no longer own an F3, and assuming you do find it, just so happens I know a man who would give his high teeth (if he had any left) for it.!!!!!! _________________ Proud Father of , 05 ktm 400exc supermoto 2018 honda crf rx supermoto

It would be great to see some detail pic of the chassis etc.
Yes it is "that" bike. I cant see any difference on the chassis (apart from the serial number that is allocated to "SPL" bikes), but I don't have a standard NF5 parked next to it to compare to. Unfortunately my bike doesn't have the "works" swing arm. I will get some pictures up as soon as I can get into my Photobucket account.
Cheers

That would be interesting Stephen. Keen to see the parts list on the last pages and compare it to mine. I think that each SPL manual is specific to a particular bike (I may be wrong though). Thanks

No fancy works swing arm here - would like one if one is available
Carbs and air tray - The carbs are SPL specific, but I cant tell the difference. Possibly magnesium? The one on the left has an old MX bike body that was machined to match the HRC one. The original is damaged.
HRC pipes. I have not seen the HRC badge on a standard NF5 pipe.

Not sure how many miles are on the crank in the bike Rich, but there is a spare crank in a box with a couple of new pistons, reeds, cylinders, heads, spark plugs and some other goodies.
Hi Deon, nice find, your not alone in wanting one of those SPL swing arms, I would love one, but as you say where would you find one. just a few observations, I do have the HRC badge on my standard NF5 pipes, and if i'm not mistaken your bike has 90-91 pipes that come up different to the 92 ones which come up straight, compared to yours which curve at the top and allow the silencer to follow the line of the seat, also look at the end of the silencers to see if the tips have a rolled edge on them as this was specific to 92 models. If you havn't seen a pic of 92 pipes look back through RS discussion, there are some pics of mine somewhere in there. Have fun with it, look forward to seeing more updates. Cheers Les. _________________ Proud Father of , 05 ktm 400exc supermoto 2018 honda crf rx supermoto
That's the basis of a really cool RS! I love those "innie" rotors, and you will get tremendous throttle pick-up with it, but sacrifice some torque/drive.
I love it! _________________ Andy.

I have a 92RS250 SPL part list (with pictures) if that helps. I can email it across to you.
I'm not sure where Neal got the bike from, but Steve Bagshaw in NZ owned one and his friend owned a 1991 version. He did offer it to me to buy, but with shipping the cost was too high.
