Phillip Island gearing

Sun Feb 16, 2014 5:04 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Can any of the Melbourne / oz owners give me an indication of Phillip Island gearing?

I used the std sprocket sizes at broadford and found myself getting to redline in 6th gear...

First ride on the new engine is likely to be at the Island so want to make sure I have appropriate sprockets on hand.

G'day Greggo,
Firstly, I rode at PI on 10th of February and the newly resurfaced track is billiard table smooth and very grippy. You will have a ball regardless of gearing. I rode my Gsxr as I'm scared of seizing my NSR around there and am too lazy to fatten up the jetting. What sort of RWHP is your bike putting out? If you go to tall with the gearing, accelerating out of Honda corner, Siberia and MG is going to be painfully slow. I think start by going one up on the front and take a sprocket with you that is two down on the rear so you can change it after the first session if you feel you still want more top speed.
Regardless off what you choose I'm sure you will have an awesome time.

Power? No idea. She is running on avgas and has Steve work his magic, so I'd like to see 60 and a bit.

But who cares.

I'm looking forward to taking turn 12 flat. And turn one. And hayshed. oh yeah. Can't wait.

Get yourself a 16 front sprocket , 1 tooth on the front is almost like 3 on the back . I used to run 16/38 at a track that is similar to PI , for me it was 1.8km straight - 2 straights with a flat out corner . A few NSR's would clock 238km/h on the gps .

Care for a friendly challenge for next year ? Very Happy

What's the challenge, top speed or laptime?

I'll take on a friendly challenge!

Early signs are there will be 3 nsr's at the island classic so far. Hopefully I can ferret out a few more!

Hi Greggo,
The only reason i asked about the HP your bike is making is the more HP/torque the bike makes the taller the gearing you can run. On another note, Phillip Island ride days are dicks and dont allow any type of lap timing or video recording devices so unless you have a well hidden setup you might strugle with the bet.

I would love to ride an NSR250 around Phillip Island. However, I cannot help but think that something with a little more power would be more suitable. (But isn't it always I suppose Smile)
I can understand how the power output of an NSR can play a role in determining the best gearing for Phillip Island.
If I had to guess I would say 16 tooth front and 43 tooth rear for a 60 RWHP NSR250. But that is just a guess, aimed at provoking others into responding.

I hired a PIRD GSXR600 a few days after the MotoGP two years ago.
I also was a little disappointed with the guys running the event as well, but they have their own interests to protect I guess.
Also the power modes on the GSXR were dis-enabled and the (brand new) bike got noticeably slower as the day went on. Hmmm.

Anyway, Phillip Island has the fastest average speed of all the tracks on the MotoGP calendar I believe. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Unexpectedly, my favourite corner was Hayshed (turn 8 ), but Stoner (turn 3) was also brilliant. Just my 2¢.

16/43 is almost like 15/40 stock gearing .
Each tooth on the rear is worth 5km/hour . If you watch some of the proddy 250 racing from years ago you will see good close racing .

I expect TuckerBag is thinking of his 1989, which runs different gearing to an MC21.

I'll be racing at the island classic rather than doing a ride day - a ride day might sneak in along the way to assist with set up. But I generally don't like ride days as there are too many nuff nuffs with egos that get in the way (slow pokes who have done a few track days and decide they are 'experts' then park themselves on the apex at shopping trolley speed in the fast group). I'm no Jorge, but there are always a deluded few that make things more dangerous than it needs to be.

I guess I will have to fork out for a couple of sprockets (just trying to keep some costs down as I've a wedding to pay for this year!) I suspect one up on the front and two more options on the rear to make sure. I'll find out mid march with the first club race down there!

The island will be a cracker on the NSR. All about conservation of momentum and keeping the bike as WOT as long as you can. It's also likely to make me realise how slow I am in some turns on my MV....

FWIW I think PIRD is probably the best track day operator in Victoria, though that is more likely due to the track space available makes it seem less crowded when you are out there.

Also beware of different chain lengths required as you go to 16 tooth front.

Do we want to try and define the "friendly" challenge a bit more? Gives us an idea of what to work towards.

How about the nsr that does the fastest top speed measured by a gps gets a floating trophy and then the nsr that does the quickest lap time gets a different floating trophy ?

You have the potential for 2 happy racers and generate some close racing .
