Mc21 gear indicator?

Thu Feb 20, 2014 11:53 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi there,

Has anyone put a gear indicator on their mc21? I have been looking around but haven't found much info for the nsr250's.

If anyone has got one wired up can you please shed some knowledge this way.

Any info is good info.

This site had a few ideas: http://biketrackdayshub.com/top-3-motorcycle-gear-indicators

Thanks again

I agree with Si's sentiment, but wiring one into an MC21 would be a piece of cake!

Look at the MC21 wiring diagram in the Workshop. Just tap into the signal(s) from the G.P.S.

A couple of ways you could do it, "easiest" way is with a microcontroller and a display.

It's sat in my head for years but other items have been more interesting pursuits (like turning an Android phone into a data logger).

Hi and thanks for the replies.

I just need one as I'm new to the fully functioning track MC21. First time it seized and 2nd and 3rd times are successful (touch wood).
I can only go a couple of times a year and I get easily distracted. If someone goes past me...I'm like what's he riding coming round me like that......then I'm like damn what gear am I in again. How many times did I just up shift?

SO I can glance down and say oh yeah that right it was 2. I'm in 4th. I know that if I was able to get there more it would become second nature till then though I would find it helpful.

Here is some layman's electrical talk: Alright I see the GPS has got the 6 wires coming out and I'm assuming that when a gear is selected that wire will become active (from the GPS) so it just a matter of knowing how the Gear indicators work as to being able to connect them up to that.

Is that a over general explanation of what I'm about to do?

Cheers

The free software is called "WiFiLapper Full", it talks about using a board called IOIO (pronounced "yoyo"). I need to pull my finger out, purchase the board, thermocouples and other devices and then start some coding.

knoxy_7: You would need to check what is the voltage that comes out of the GPS when that gear is selected (check individually to confirm they don't have a different voltage.....I suspect it will all be the same voltage either 5V or 12V).
Three ways to do it.

- Simplest way if it's the same voltage, you have 6 LEDs on your dash hooked up to each individual gear, you need to set up 6 LEDs with resistors so you don't blow your LEDs.

- If it's all the same voltage, you would need to have something with multiple digital inputs to a device that can drive a LCD display and crunch out a nice number on the display. Very simple logic.

- If it's variable voltage, then you need a device with an analogue input that can drive an LCD display and crunch out a nice number on the display. Similar logic to above.

That's what Matt@Tyga said could be a easy one to do.

I'll have a look into the wiring digits. I already cut the speedo off the bike and made up a dash with EGT's and a Digi Temp gauge so there is room for some gear lights. Probably sounds better than it is. Function over looks.

Cheers nxrsr20.

All the GPS does is go to earth for each wire, when the gear is selected.

So, just put it in first, find the earthed wire and note it.......repeat as necessary.

Then, find a bunch of LED's, but make sure you know their rating. Then google "LED resistor calculator" and punch in the numbers and it'll tell you which resistor to use. Easy peasy.

I'm no electronics expert, but the internet has all the info you need to pretend to be one.

Don't forget your LEDs are polarity sensitive, so install the in the correct way, Uncle Google will be able to help you with that one as well.

Ill let you know how I go anyway.

In case anyone else wants to do it.

Hi,

Just thought I would follow up with my results.

Check the video for a little sample.

http://youtu.be/mF1sapBKjm0

It worked a treat.

To confirm the voltage that runs through the GPS wires is 5.2volts when not selected and 0.0v when selected.

So I just ran one wire off the Battery Negative/Black terminal to run all 6 the black wires from the lights and tapped into the GPS wires for the voltage/Red. It works in the opposite way as in all 6 are lit and the unlit is the gear. But I'm fine with that. I tapped in to the GPS under the seat so if I need to pull the engine I can a little easier.

If any one wants to know exactly how I did it feel free to ask.

Also I have 12v lights but its only running off 5.2v so is there any need for a resistor??

Came out pretty good for under 30 bucks.

Here are the leds I bought.

Says it has a "Includes dropping resistor"

No need for a resistor, it has one integral for a larger voltage. If you're happy with the brightness all you have to do is keep riding Smile

Hello
I just found a gear display for 5.20 USD . It can only show N,1,2,3,4,5 but this is done by just connecting one lead to 12V and the corresponding 1-5 lead to ground, ideal for a NSR. 6. gear could just be blank.

I did however try to combine the pins and by combining 2 leads(could be done with just 2 extra diodes) I got a mirrored 6 a 8 and a 9, which could be used for 6. gear.

Its on ebay, so I don't dare to post a link Laughing but PM me for a link

Maybe a real 6 could be found if the display was hacked but its filled with some black goo.
