cylinder mounting surface woes

Mon Aug 18, 2014 4:03 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi Guys, Long story, but I have a set of cylinders that are beautiful on the inside but which were a real bitch as far as getting base gasket material off - guessing mechanic did not mount them dry!
On the advice of a different mechanic, I ended up having the exterior and mounting surface bead blasted - thought bead blasting would remove the last bits, but it didn't, as can be seen in the pics. Going at this with a razor just doesn't seem to do much of anything (I did that for hours before the bead blasting and if it's possible, it is worse now), and I'm afraid to gouge it.

So the question is, is this mountable as is, with a new base gasket, and if not, WTF can I do? The plating on these is original and virtually perfect, so I'd really like them to be more than pretty paper weights. Sad

Thanks for continued advice.

They certainly cannot be mounted like that.

We could possibly turn them down, and fit HRC base gaskets, or even possibly "double up" base gaskets, but you definitely shouldn't fit them like that.

First off, I'd remove the dowl.

If you remove the head studs and true the cylinder in a lathe you'll be able to take the lightest of cuts off the base face.

this is how I did it: glass. hole slightly larger than projecting portion of cylinder. 800 grit wet/dry paper duct taped to glass. WD40 as lube. you'll have to buy a diamond hole saw. I siliconed the glass to some plywood for added stability. and I grease paper gaskets.

cylinder mounting

Hi JIM how are you, that looks a mess and skimming as suggested would be the way to go.

Its amazing what some home mechanics do, a friend of mine bought a Triumph 500 one factor that decided him to buy was no oil leaks, a good while later he had to take it down to replace main bearings, he could not get the crankcases to part on inspection he found that
they had been Araldited together as previously they had been butchered with a screwdriver as someone else had prised them apart, it cost him a new pair of cases.

I hope you solve your problem it would be shame not to use those barrels.

DUX. Smile

The only problem with that method, Carl, is ensuring you get even pressure on the barrel. Given the amount that Jim needs to remove, I wouldn't suggest doing it by hand. He'd easily end up with lopsided barrels!

oh, Lord, if I tried that by hand, it would for sure end very, very badly, even if I had the equipment, which I do not...."a man has to know his limits."
Andy, about how much would it cost to have you skim these two cylinders to make them useable (or are such matters meant to be discussed via private message)?
Thanks.

You'd be looking at no more than £30.00 per cylinder. What cylinders are they Jim, H or L?

H cylinders (for R engine). Stephen, are you reasonably confident you can make them workable, or is it more of a "we can't really tell anything until we see them" situation? In either event, I'd rather take my
chances on you guys, because you know the bike inside and out, which is crucial in my opinion. So to what address should I send them?
Thanks.

As long as the head face and cylinder plating is ok, which you say it is I'm fully confident that we can re-machine the base gasket face so that you can still use either the stock base gasket or, in the worst case the 0.6mm thick gasket without any trouble.

well, the head face has the sandblasted surface (as opposed to shiny metal) but there are none of the gasket deposits (see photo). Is that okay? If so, can you give me a shipping address?
Thanks.

OK, that's a bit more of a challenge!

If you're happy to remove the studs it will help us but no real problem if you dont want too. We'll have a good bash at fixing that too. The head face needs to be perfectly flat and even. I'm sure we can fix that too.

Andy, I do (or did) play baseball, but I confess I am not getting your reference...feeling denser by the moment. Confused

So would I send the cylinders/barrels here, addressed to you or Stephen?:
