Does anyone know if a VFR400R NC30 front wheel is the same as a an NSR front wheel? Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, all NC30 front wheels are 3.5" wide, whereas the MC18/21/28 fronts are 3" wide.

The disc offset is the same, as is the axle size.

A 3.5" front really needs to be matched to an HRC rear, and the suspension setup, as the wider front slows the steering down noticeably.

Which then begets the next question: What size HRC rear best goes with a 3.5" front? Is there a readily available rear wheel similar to the VFR400 front that would make a nice match?

Here in the states getting race rubber in 110/70-17 and 150/60-17 can be a challenge. And forget about the MC18's 18" rear. They have to be shipped in, I believe from the UK. I have been running Bridgestone BT-090 and BT-003 Race/Street and they do indeed wear like "iron" but am looking to try out something more sticky and perhaps slicks.

A 3.5" rim allows for the much more readily available 120/70-17.

HRC started off with a 4.5" option, which you can squeeze a 160 on to if you really have to. But as I already said, you need to work on the suspension (including the ride height), because it's very easy to ruin the handling.

HRC also used a 5" and a 5.5" rear rim.

Readily available? ROTFLMAO

Cangus, see if you can get hold of some Dunlop D209GP's, they come in 110 and 150 and nice and soft, i have been using them about 4 years with no hassles, they are what the superteen racers use over here on their 125 Aprillia's.

rubber technology

Sat Jan 24, 2015 2:41 am » Post: #8 » Download Post

Interesting thread. Twenty years go if you were going out on the track with an nsr or rs you would have wanted the best slicks available. Hrc went to wider rims back then to increase the contact patch because of the state of tire technology. They were willing to sacrifice increased rotating mass to gain traction.

Tire technology has come a long way since then. I think even the best 250 2T riders in the world from 20 years ago would feel comfortable racing these bikes on today's street going tires. A set of Bridgestone battlax bt-003 are available for our stock rims and will out perform almost any slick racing compound from 20 years ago. I order mine online and they get delivered to the front door.

The added weight and inertial mass of a larger rim isn't going to provide any performance improvement.....maybe just some aesthetics.

That's just my opinion.

Couldn't agree more! People laughed when they saw the NSR500Vs out for the first time on Pirelli road tyres.

Quote from Matt@TYGA on the day, "nothing, nothing passed me!".

The only person so far who said he would've liked to try it with slicks was John McGuinness, at Rockingham. But by the time he rode it, the tyres had done several track days and really were on their very last legs. He still said it was an awesome ride though, but we could hear him spinning it up through the long left-hander. He actually commented on how good it was on the Supercorsas.

I've ended up purchasing Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC1/SC2 in stock MC21 sizes. They are pricey at $375/set. I am hoping to feel improvement over Bridgestone BT-003.

All Dunlop has to offer are Unbeaten 02. These are popular for use on the little Ninja's. But much less $$$. Does anyone have any experience with Dunlop Unbeaten 02?

I would be extremely surprised if you're not impressed with the Pirellis. Worth every penny!

Down here in Oz, for (new) proddy racing (ninja250s) we have been using the rosso II in 110/70, sticky as buggery and still manage a whole season. but the sc1/2 option sound really tempting.

For this year I will be running the Pirelli's but I haven't given up on a 5" or 5.25" wide rear in order to be able to use 160 slicks and to go along with the 3.5" front from an NC30. Slicks are seemingly only available in 120 and 160 sizes. Someone on this site stated 5.25" is maximum width that will fit. There has also been some discussion about using a CBR F3 5" rear but only reference to "I think someone did it but it took some machining". An NF5 uses a 4.5x18 rear wheel so no go. An NX5 uses a single sided swingarm so no go. An NXA uses a 5.5x17 so too wide and no go. Did HRC make wheels specific for the NSR? Or do you (Andy) mean when you say HRC makes 5" and 5.5" wheels they are for the RS?

I've even looked into having wheels widened. Cost is excessive and read some spotty reviews too.

And new Dymags are way out of my price range.
