MC28 HRC Card Set Up Questions.....

Sun Oct 05, 2014 11:32 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello everyone, so i have a chance to get a 030 or 010 HRC card for my MC28, i was wondering how do i set it up to let my PGM read the HRC card? I know i need to do the wiring splice to make the bike run, but isnt that after i set up the HRC card to match the PGM? Do i need to send the HRC card along with the PGM to someone to match them or Can i do that by myself? Thank you for everyone's help!!

Does anyone know how to code the HRC card to a PGM unit?

HRC cards were coded by Honda when you ordered them. As they are now discontinued, the only way to recode them is to send the card(s) and the corresponding PGM-IV to a vendor in Japan.

We can facilitate this service, which costs approximately 25,000 Yen.

Standard cards can be re-coded to HRC specification. PGM010, PGM020, and PGM030 are all available.

Before you splash out on an HRC card, you should be aware that the MC28 needs far more than just a card to reach anything near its potential.

The MC28 is comprehensively restricted. You will most certainly also need an HRC jet kit, a set of race expansion chambers, and at the very least a modified airbox, but preferably an HRC carb shield and/or pod filters.

By performing a wire splice and fitting an HRC card, and leaving everything else stock, all you will do is make it run appallingly! The MC28 needs to be derestricted with a complete package, for which you are looking at anything up to around US$2000.

Thank you so much Andy! So how much would probably cost for recoding a standard card to a HRC one? I am actually trying to source a HRC kit and an expansion chamber along with the HRC card, but i didnt know the bike would run appalling with only HRC card derestriction. I was thinking to let it run with a HRC card first, then derestrict other parts later. I guess i will derestrct the complete package at the same time. Thanks a lot for reminding!

Hi Bilda. Your other option would be to buy a complete second hand HRC030 coded PGMIV which will cost more than recoding the card but you will then have a spare PGM. Andy is right concerning cost. To get mine going I installed an HRC030 PGM, exhaust, aftermarket Air box, HRC needles and X/Y air jets, did the wire splice and rejetted. That's pretty much the minimum you need but I also had the heads decked, the barrels ported and I installed billet exhaust manifolds and a performance reed block. All that and it's only putting out early 60s HP. It's a much better bike now than it was though. Chalk and cheese really. That said, in hindsight, had I done a bit more research prior to buying the bike, I probably would have gone with a 21 just for the ease of de-restriction compared to the 28.

You can't deny the looks of the MC28, especially in Rothmans (although personally I prefer the more angular look of the '21), but they are a pain in the butt to get going, and there's no cheap option.

The problem is they don't work with just a card and a jet change. You do need the HRC kit, and unless you have a lot of experience, someone to set it up correctly. There's an awful lot of potential in any NSR (though not quite so much for an MC16 in its base form), and not releasing at least 60hp is just doing it, and yourself, a massive injustice.

Anyone who says ragging a sub 40hp (and yes, most stockers make even less than the 40hp legal Japanese limit -- we regularly test them at around 37~38hp!) MC28 is fun, has clearly never ridden it on anything other than a go-kart track! The sad truth is even a good 125 will give an MC28 a hard time on an open road! It's really worth the investment.

The red and green traces are both of similar spec (same race pipes, airbox mods, jet kit, inlets etc.), but 010 vs. 030 cards. However, the red bike was considerably more "tired" than the other. The stock bike was, for all intent and purposes, brand new.

Yes. We run all our road bikes on pump unleaded. Even StephenRC45's MC21 F-III (75hp) was run on it. Wink

There's not much point in setting up a road bike to run on anything but good quality unleaded. There aren't many places you can pull in to an airfield to top up these days! Smile

This is realy interesting that the hrc10 card work better with unleaded than the hrc30

From what I understand that still hold the dyno record for a 250 in the uk

We've not tested anything better yet. It's also better than any 300, even the tuned one we ran, with PJ38s, Wisecos, and VHM heads.
