Can anyone out there tell me if i was to run plugs with resistors should i run HT caps without resistors in my MC16? Need to get plugs and caps so just wondering what is the best. Think it should be 5k ohm caps and no resistor plugs? All the iridium plugs i have seen have resistors, ie, BR9ECMIX or BR9EIX. Is it better to run iridium plugs on these old strokers? Have heard stories of CDIs being damaged by using the wrong caps and plugs. As you can tell i am new to this NSR scene. Thanks lads for any help, Andy.
Thanks for that, that must be with a cap with a resistor then? By the way, am i writing in the right section as i dont want to get abuse for being clueless!
BR9EIX is the iridium upgrade of B9ES i believe. Are these not right? Do you have to stick with standard copper core plugs? I have had good results using iridium plugs on two strokes in the past. Anybody got any opinions on plugs and caps?
You'd need to ask an NGK representative... we'd only fit the plugs recommended by Honda, plus they are readily available, and cheap!
MC16s, and NSRs in general, are not known for eating spark plugs.
BR9EIX: approx £7.50ea
B9ES: approx £2.50ea
B9ECS somewhere in the middle. I guess, if the caps are buggered, then it may be worth looking in to resistor type plugs and silicone caps, but the stock stuff works perfectly well. Again, you'd need to check with NGK to be absolutely sure the conversion is OK with the '87 pre-PGM ignition. 1988 onwards use BR9ECMs. (About £6ea) _________________ Andy.

The MC16 is a cracking little motor, but it's very under powered, and unstressed in standard form. I don't think throwing £15~20 worth of plugs at it (and corresponding caps) will do anything other than do you out of a few beers at the weekend! _________________ Andy.

No problem with throwing a few bob at it, just getting expert opinions as im not very clued up with this bike. As i understand it they hit the road with a modest 40-45bhp? Porting and carb upgrades would probably unleash a few more ponies i would think but thats a long way off yet. Just looking at ignition problems at the minute. No juice from the flywheel. Stator? Flywheel? Pulse Coils?
Lots of little restrictions in the MC16... actually, not restrictions as such, just things that were better developed on later models. The HRC kitted MC16 was still rated at 68PS though, C/W 28mm carbs. There's power to be had from one, but it'll take some digging out.
You should see around 180W/14.8V from the AC generator @ 5000rpm. If you don't then you can probably suspect either the stator or reg/rec, or both!
Honda state it's a "special" reg/rec, and using a different one will damage the CDIs. Quite how true this is, I cannot say, but it wouldn't be the first time they have used something a little "different". _________________ Andy.

i suspect the internals can cope with a fair bit more welly, Honda usually (not always) over engineer things a little but thats good. They just have the edge in my opinion when it comes to build quality over the other Jap stuff. Its just nice to try and keep these old strokers alive, they are a dying breed on the road now sadly.
