I,ve been living with clunky changes for a few years now and can't help but feel that the shift should be slicker
I,ve had the box out and checked that all the washers and circlips are all ok and in order, and the selecter return spring was not trapped between the case and the gear box plate etc. It's a if the box isn't unloading
There is slight wear on the clutch hub but nothing that's looks that bad
Even checked to see if the torque rod was missing
Not having ridden another NSR for comparison, having to be firm and a noticeable clunk may be the norm. How do others find the NSR dry clutch gear box.
I don't want to start changing boxes and clutch parts etc if this is normal. _________________ Russ
Have you tried a different oil ? I think I tried bellray once and replaced it the next day as I noticed a different feeling while changing gears and never liked it . I am still using motul
They can often be a bit "clunky" into 1st gear, but many Hondas seem to be like that.
Clutch drag can cause it, so make sure the cable is adjusted properly, and that there's no wear on the basket or hub. Also check the torque link for work bushes. Movement in the link can cause notchy changes, as can a worn or badly adjusted chain.
As Neal says, different oils can even have different results, and Dave's correct too, a bent selector shaft [which can happen if the bike is crashed on the left side, but damage can often not be apparent] can cause selection problems too. Along those lines, you should check the selector forks as well, although in my experience it's less likely to be an issue. _________________ Andy.

From what I remember, Mat said that they had the same problem on one of Pauls bikes. Matt went through the gearbox, chain tension, etc. Couldn't get rid of this clunking gear change.
Eventually found some wear in the torque stopper link.
Once he'd sorted that, the problem had gone.
I think the torque stopper link has been discontinued by Honda now. So, if the bushes are worn, I think you will need to look at getting them replaced. Instead of just buying a new link.
Last time I looked, the two collars for the link were still available. These are easily made though.
